This month’s inspiration photo below is from Samantha over at Little Bit of Home.  I love her color glass paired with the yellow Forsythia branches, isn’t this such a pretty mantel display?

This inspiration had me thinking what can I do.  I have several green color glass pieces and love……

but I wanted to do something other than just style my green pieces.  You know me….I have to make something !! 🙂

That’s just what I did.  Let’s get started making our own colored glass!!!!  It was so exciting to watch the clear glass turn into a colored piece.  I am still amazed.

Here are the items you will need to make your own colored glass.  What’s so great about making your own….you can make the glass ANY color you want!  How fun is that?

Items you will need

  • a clear glass container
  • food coloring
  • modge podge clear
  • 2 containers (1 for your mixture and one larger to catch all the drippings
  • alcohol
  • clean cloth
  • plastic spoon
  • rubber gloves
  • cookie sheet
  • oven preheated to 200°

I started with a clean glass container.  I gave my vase a good washing, dried it and then sprayed my alcohol mixture to give it one last cleaning.

I took my modge podge and food coloring and mixed the two together.  Depending on the size of your glass container will determine how much modge podge you use.  My vase is 14 inches tall I used 1 cup of modge podge. (the second one I did was 11″ tall and I used 1/2 cup)  For the color I went with blue, I dropped about 50 drops of blue.  When I was mixing it I thought it wasn’t as dark as I wanted, but actually it came out perfect.  The color dries about 2 to 3 shades darker than the mixture.

I made sure the glue mixture was mixed well.  I poured the glue into my vase.

I twirled the paint in the vase until the inside of the vase was entirely covered with the colored glue.

When the glue got to the top of the vase I placed my container underneath to catch all the drips.  Next time I will use a larger container. 🙂

Make sure you don’t disturb the inside of your vase.  If you see an air bubble just gently pop it and twirl the vase to cover up the area again.

When the vase was all covered I used my alcohol mixture again and cleaned the outside of my vase.  I made sure I didn’t disturb the top or the inside of my vase.

I preheated my over to 200°.  I placed my vase in the center of a cookie sheet.

My vase was pretty tall so I removed all my oven racks and placed the cookie sheet on the bottom of my oven.

Let the vase bake for 1 hour.

After an hour I place the vase some where it can cool for an hour.  As it cooled it became more transparent.

When it cooled I took a soft cloth and buffed the inside to remove all the glue’s film.  And again cleaned the outside of my vase.

I took some color string adding it to the neck of my vase.  I placed green, orange and brown string ribbon from the Dollar Tree.  I added just a touch of hot glue and wrapped the string around the neck.

I am amazed at how modge podge and food color made a stained glass.  I love it!  I placed this one in my large floor lantern.

I painted another vase in a blue/green color to match (or tried too) the green glass on my foyer table.  You can catch my video tutorial in my FACEBOOK HIGHLIGHTS or my INSTAGRAM HIGHLIGHTS.

I styled the table in our foyer instead of my mantel for the Pinterest Challenge.  I added my green vase with some faux greenery and moved things around just a little.

I hope I inspired you to make your own colored glass decorative piece.  Making the vase a color to fit your home decor is fun and so affordable.  Pin my tutorial for later.
