Today I am finally going to give my bar stools a much needed facelift. What a better time to brighten up my kitchen area for summer than to brighten up those stools ?? 🙂 They have been bothering me since I painted the table and chairs. I purchased the stools about 15 years ago at Hobby Lobby. The stools are used every day. We eat all of our meals on the bar, my hubby reads the paper each night on the bar and I do most of my DIYs there. The stools are not broken and still are functional. I could buy new, but why ?? I love working with what I have so painting and adding new fabric to the cushions will give my stools a fresh new look.
I headed into Hobby Lobby to look at upholstery fabric. I found this cute blue buffalo check. I purchased 1/2 yard of the material. Then I went into Lowe’s to look for spray paint to match the color of the table and hutch. I found Matte Clamshell by Krylon. I bought two cans. (I had to go back to Lowe’s and grab 2 more cans).
My hutch and table and chairs were painted with Benjamin Moore Dove White. I didn’t want to paint my stools with a brush so I purchased Krylon Fusion All in 1, paint and primer. The color is as close as I could get.
Here are my bar stools.
I took my stools apart so I can easily paint them. I removed the seats, the swivel part and the top of the seat.
I sanded all the parts of the stool with 220 grit sand paper. Then I took soapy water and cleaned and dried all the pieces.
Placed all the pieces on a plastic tarp for spray painting, I sprayed two coats letting it dry between coats.
Letting the pieces sit to dry completely before putting them back together.
In the meantime, I am going to reupholster the cushions.
Removing all the staples will be a chore. I use my scraper to pop up the staples and then my needle nose to pull out of the cushion.
Being careful to remove the black felt because I want to reuse it. Making sure the squares are centered I am taking the piece and placing it on my cushion. I am centering the 4 squares in the center of the cushion and then flipping it over carefully to staple.
Stapling all 4 centers to make sure it is tight and keep in place.
When stapling I made sure I didn’t pull too tight, pulling it too tight can cause indents where the staples are. I turned it around to make sure its smooth and taut. I flipped it back over and continued to staple.
I shared my tutorial on how I upholstery, if you want a refresh you can go over and read how I apply new fabric to an item. HOPE CHEST MAKEOVER. Since the cushions are round I pull up on the fabric to make the edges smooth . This will keep the edges and top free from wrinkles and folds. When I stapled the fabric all around I cut all the excess material off.

I placed the stools together and added the new re-upholstery cushions.
Stepping back after they are put together, to me they look too painted. So I decided to give them a little distressing. Just on the edges.
Yes so much better. I wiped down the stools then I applied one coat of Minwax Paste Finishing wax to the stool.
I am so glad I finally broke down and gave the bar stools some attention.

Love the refresh, Terrie! They just brighten up the whole room! I personally love doing stapled cushion projects. But I hate prepping and sanding all those scrolly parts-ugh! I actually started using some of the fabric, or a coordinating one on the bottom, so it looks extra cute from the underside;) When I sold them at my store, it was much more fun when I helped load them into the customer’s car. #littledetails Enjoy the rest of your summer!

I love your stools! You are so right the hardest part is making the decision. I’ve got a pair of bar stools that I’ve been wanting to redo, but just can’t make the decision of WHAT to do.
