COFFEE TABLE

Hello friends!   Can you believe it is already Friday?  Where did this week go?  I guess it flew for me because I only had a 3 day work week.

Welcome back to my “show me your….” series!  Last week was a show and tell on nightstands.  I didn’t get the opportunity to view any of your nightstands. ((boohoo!)) Just an FYI, you have to post a picture in the comments in order for me to view it. Ha!  I hope you enjoyed viewing and reading about mine.  Maybe this week someone out there will humor this ole girl and play along with the show and tell.  I would truly love to see each and every one of your pieces.

This week’s piece is the coffee table.  I can’t wait to see your coffee table and how you dressed it up.  If you do not have room for a coffee table, you can show us an end table or sofa table that you have dressed up.

Here is my coffee table all dressed up.

Before I go through what’s all on my coffee table, I wanted to share my opinion on why we should dress our coffee tables up.

When you change up your living room what is the first thing you want to change?  So many things come to my mind:  throw pillows, area rugs, curtains, wall art and even painting the walls.  When looking at magazines you will see pictures of living rooms all decorated so picture-perfect.  Your first thought would probably be,  I could never have that because we live in our home.    I think you can have that look and live in the home too.  It would not be picture-perfect all the time, but when you clean your living room to host a gathering, you would want your room to look like that magazine, wouldn’t you?  I would.

When someone walks into your living room, what is the first thing they notice?  You want it to be a statement piece.  I was always told that a fireplace is the focal point of a room, I also think since the coffee table is in the center of the room it should have the center of attention.  So don’t leave it unattended.  My opinion, just because we call it a “coffee” table doesn’t mean it has to be bare for our coffee to sit on.  A coffee table can be used for the basic needs and still be dressed up.

Do you remember my blog on my china cabinet where I gave you some tips on decorate? If not, click here on “china cabinet” it will bring you to that blog about what tips to use while decorating.   I use the same tips on my coffee table.

Here is a close up of my coffee table’s décor.

One of the decorating trends right now are trays.  There are so many different types of trays out there from wooden to mirror.  Mine here is a wire serving tray,  I spray painted it (of course it was.  you know I sleep with my paint brush).  You can spend as much or as little on trays.  I have found several at thrift stores for a few dollars.

Books….books and more books. They are a good way to decorate your piece,  stacking the books add color, texture, height and symmetry. They also could be used for conversational pieces.  For example, I placed a scrapbook I made for my son and placed it on his coffee table.  Everyone that comes to visit opens it up to look through it. If we would of just stuck it in a drawer or closet somewhere, it would be collecting dust.  Well….it might be on his coffee table too!

Candles bring warmth to the table.  When candles are burning it makes the room a place to relax and unwind.  For various reasons, some people cannot burn candles.  There are candles now that are battery operated and look like a real burning candle.

Nature, bringing in flowers or greenery. I tend to go with the faux type.  Using faux plants or flowers make it mess free and requires no care taking other than dusting them off.

Your setting wouldn’t be complete without a little something unusual.  Such as a bowl, vase, bead garland, container or anything that you want.  Just keep it with the theme.  Mine are the magnifying glass and snuffer.  Play with a variety of shapes, textures and colors when decorating your coffee table, it’s all about  your personal style!

Here is what’s on my coffee table.

I placed a large wire tray in the center for a foundation piece.  I purchased the tray at a store called Gordman’s in Illinois while visiting.  Two gold mercury glass candlesticks.  I chose to use two of the same height instead of a tapered look, I purchased from Tuesday Mornings.  The two battery operated candles are from Kirkland’s.  The wick moves like a flame.  Cool!  I had the two Better Homes and Garden books in my closet.  I thought why not, it could work.  I placed a magnifying glass on top of the books.  I made the flower arrangement myself,  bought the flowers from Hobby Lobby.  The glass jar was an old used glass candle. A quick pop in the microwave to melt the leftover wax, cleaned all of that out and washed it up.  A great vase for the flowers.

Next to the side of the tray I placed a candle with snuffer.   The candle was a gift and the snuffer I found on clearance at TJMaxx for $1.50.
