If you follow my blog you know the first Wednesday of the month I host a DIY Challenge.  I gathered a group of bloggers who also loves to create budget friendly décor for their homes.   For the March challenge, we all decided to take items we have and repurpose it into a creative home enhancements.  At the bottom of my page I will have all of their links so you can go over and see what item they are working with.

Two years ago I found a mirror in Hobby Lobby.  I was participating in a clearance shelf challenge, even though the mirror was cracked the frame caught my eye.  To see the full mirror revamp blog post you can click here → CLEARANCE MIRROR.  I decided to upcycle the frame….again!

Took it off the wall, removed the back of the frame and went to work transforming the look.

Here are the items I used for this project:

• frame
• 5 packs of Dollar Tree ¼” wooden dowel rods
• Dollar Tree large round framed mirror
• wood glue
• hot glue
• wire snips
• pencil
• paint

First thing I did was remove the hot glue design from the back part of the frame.  It popped right off once I used a putting knife.

After I removed the design, I took a hand sander to smooth the surface.

I wiped the surface off,  painted two coats with the wall paint in the Master bedroom, Perfect Greige – Sherwin Williams.

 

I took a Dollar Tree mirror removed the mirror from the frame.  I also removed the tabs and wall hook from the back of the frame.

Using the back of the frame I measured the dowel rods to fit on the lip of the frame.  I measured and cut to size with my wire snips.  Each piece was a different size due to the frame being round.

Once I had the frame filled with dowel rods I put the dowel rods to the side and painted the frame.

Here are the steps I took to paint the mirror frame to look like the larger frame.

1. painted the black frame with perfect greige Sherwin Williams paint
2. painted the frame with Waverly antique wax then wiped it off
3. dry brushed Waverly plaster onto the frame

 

Once it was completely dried I applied wood glue to the back lip of the frame where I placed each dowel rod.  I applied a drop of hot glue to each end of the dowel rod for a quick grab until the wood glue set.

I glued and lined up all the precut dowel rods onto the frame.

I placed the small frame in the center of the larger one.  I took a pencil and lightly drew around the frame.

Taking my wood glue I applied a thin line of glue to my pencil line, applied hot glue to the edge of the mirror frame and placed it on the glue mark.

I took more of the Dollar Tree dowel rods cutting each rod into 5″ pieces.  To secure the rods to the frame I placed a drop of wood glue to each end of the dowel rod and a drop of hot glue to the edge of the mirror frame and the inner part of the large frame.  Gluing 4 pieces 12 o’clock, 3 o’clock, 6 o’clock and 9 o’clock  position.

I filled in all the spaces doing the same steps until I filled up the frame with the 5″ dowel rods.

Last step I did was giving the dowel rods some texture.  I took the antique wax lightly brushing it onto the rods.

I am thrilled at how this turned out, it’s better than I had pictured.
