DIY FAUX WOODEN DOUGH BOWL CANDLE

I am sure y’all have seen those little wooden bowl candles, right?  Have you also seen the price tags that are on them?  WOW.  I love candles, but I couldn’t pay or should say I wouldn’t pay what they are going for.  BUT I want one!!  Today, I am going to show how I am able to get one for our home, if you want one too, you will want to keep reading. 🙂

It’s time for another monthly Creative Craft hop, this month we have 9 crafters sharing some fun crafts.  A special thanks to Sara, Birdz of a Feather for hosting the craft hop each month.  At the bottom of my page, I will share each participant’s link to their craft.

I took a walk in Dollar Tree for a shape that would be that of a wooden dough bowl.  I went down every aisle, finally came to a soap dish that would work perfectly!

Below is a miniature wooden dough bowl candle, the soap dish has a similar shape, don’t you think?

First thing I need to do, is remove the suction cup and arm from the soap dish.  The suction cup holder was easy to remove by slipping it out of the slots.

Taking my snips, I carefully sniped the arm from the frame of the soap dish.

It cracked a little but the most part stayed intact.

Now, I had my base, it’s time to turn it to look like a wooden dough bowl.

HOW TO CREATE A FAUX WOODEN DOUGH BOWL

This is another project where I grab my joint compound.  I have used joint compound on many other craft projects.

Turning the dish upside down, I started applying joint compound to the surface.

Let that dry overnight.  I turned it over and did the same to the top.

Once it has dried thoroughly, I gave it a light sanding, smoothing all the surface.

Painting is the fun part, get creative.  Adding layers of colors to form the look of wood.  I used several different colors of Waverly chalk paint.

The final step is giving it a coat of poly.

HOW TO CREATE A WOODEN BOWL CANDLE

Add your votive candle in boiling water, carefully, don’t burn yourself.

While wax is melting, add the wicks to the bowl.  I used hot glue to the metal part of the wicks and placed them in the bottom of my container.

Pour the melted wax into the container.  Do not move until the wax hardens, cut the wicks.

Look how cute this turned out!  I hope you make one of these for yourself, it was a lot of fun!

    1. Thank you so much Gail, it’s hard to find crafts to share that hasn’t been shown. I love giving outside of the box ideas. I am happy how this turned out.

  1. Wow Terrie, I am beyond impressed! Yes those dough bowl candles are pricey! I can’t believe you recreated one with a $ tree plastic soap dish! Amazing and it looks fabulous!

    1. Thanks Jenna. Dollar Tree has a lot of neat things that can be transformed into cute home decor. It took me two passes before I decided to use the soap dish. ha!

  2. Amazing Terrie! Once again you have created a lovely piece of decor using a Dollar Tree item most of us would ignore! I love this one!

  3. Terrie, you did such a great job transforming plastic to a wood patina. You’ve inspired me–looks like it’s time to make more candles! Blessings, Cecilia @My Thrift Store Addiction

  4. I want just half of your creativity! I LOVE this and can honestly say that I never would have thought to make something like this. These would make great small gifts too. I’m going to have to give it a try. You would never know that it’s not a wooden bowl! Greatness!

  5. Wow, that’s just incredible Terrie. I would not know that’s not wood – or for that matter, it started out as plastic! Now it’s a beautiful decor piece. I bet you don’t really miss the real deal now. Necessity is definitely the mother of invention 🙂

    1. Thanks Sara for the sweet comment and for hosting each month this fun blog hop! Well, my bowl isn’t perfect when you place it next to a real bowl but it looks pretty good in my home. Thanks again!
