DIY INTERCHANGEABLE WELCOME SIGN

Hey there!  Welcome to Decorate and More with Tip! If you are coming over from Carol, Bluesky at Home welcome, so glad you are here. Carol always has such cute DIYs to share.  The summer wreath she made didn’t disappoint.  Here on my blog I share how you can decorate your home on a budget.  I share budget friendly decorations by creating it from scratch, revamping, re-purposing or giving it a makeover with easy tutorials.  I hope I inspire you to create something beautiful for your home. 🙂

If you have been following my blog, you know that the first Wednesday of the month I host a DIY Challenge. I gathered a group of bloggers who loves creating budget friendly home décor too. 🙂  For July’s challenge, we are doing a summer DIY.  You can find links to each of their blogs at the end of my page.

My DIY is a simple do it yourself type of project.  I am sharing how you can make a WELCOME sign to sit on your porch or really anywhere you would like.  Our front porch is more of a stoop than a porch.  I measured the area next to our door and found a piece of wood that would fit nicely. Instead of using stencils or a cricut I went to Dollar General and purchased six 4″ wooden letters.  I purchased the letters; W-E-L-C-M-E.  For the O; I am going to make little ornaments to change as the season does.

First thing I did was paint my board.  I am using the same color as our front door.  To take a look at our front door project click here → FRONT DOOR REFRESH.

Now to the letters.  I couldn’t find a W so I purchased another letter M and turned it upside down.  I painted two coats of black paint to all of my letters.

Like I said earlier, for the O I am going to make seasonal ornaments to hang in it’s place.  For summer, I picture watermelons.  I took some underlayment I had left over from my paper organizer project.  You can find wooden cut outs most anywhere, even Dollar Tree has Crafter’s Square wooden cut outs.  I made mine since I had all the extra wood, I made a 4″ square to keep the size even with the letters.  I made a half circle, the shape of a piece of watermelon.  I wanted the look of a watermelon with a bite mark.  I took the drill and drilled a couple holes to resemble a bite mark.  I drilled two holes, one on each top side to place a wire to hang my piece. Sanded my piece well.

I painted my piece in green, white and a dark pink and made some watermelon seeds as well.

I took a piece of wire from Dollar Tree, threaded it through the drilled holes, curled the ends to make a hanger.  I took some cute ribbon and made a messy bow to attach to the hanger.

As you can see the watermelon with the hanger turned out the same size as the letters.

While I had the underlayment out I cut a pumpkin shape.

I will have fun making more for the other seasons.  With the pumpkin at least I am ready for fall.

My letters are all painted and my little ornaments are done, now it’s time to put it all on my painted board.

I added a picture hanger to the back of the board so I can place it on the brick with a brick hanger.

I placed a bow at the top of my board and measured out 1 inch space between each letter.  To hook my wooden ornaments on the board I used a screw hook so the wire will stay securely on the board.

To attach my letters to the board I used Power Grab, applying it to the back of each letter and placing it on the board.  The Power Grab will keep the letters on the board in any type of weather.

Since my board will be outside I gave it a coat of clear sealer.

I used a brick hanger and added the sign to the brick next to our front door.  See how tight it is?  The sign fits perfectly.  Gives the small stoop some fun!

That’s it.  I didn’t have to trace out the letters or make a stencil.  How about those changeable ornaments?  How fun are those?   I have this cute little welcome sign for our front porch, all is left to do is make a wreath and a rug  to place out there as well.  Stay tune!!

    1. My board is a 2 x 6. I have no room on our stoop to have the size I would of love to have. It fits perfectly and the Dollar General letters works perfect for the size. I hope you share with me how yours turns out. Welcome to Decorate and More with Tip, so happy you are here!

  1. Such a cute welcome sign! I pinned it so (hopefully) I can make one in the future. Your blog is the place to find great projects.

    1. Awe thank you Donna. You are so sweet. I do hope you make something I share up on my blog. I am so happy you are pinning to save for yourself and to share with your friends.

  2. Terrie! This is so cute! I have had a similar project half done for two years hanging out in the garage! My problem was with the size…yours is so much more manageable! Now I know, I am starting over! The watermelon is the cutest! I love how you cut that little bite out of it! Thanks for inviting me to join you all again!

    1. Chloe I am so happy I gave you some inspiration to grab that project back out and to finish it. I know the little watermelon is the cutest of all on the board. Thanks Chloe for joining in the fun. It’s always nice working with you.

  3. Wow! That you made those changeable ornaments is amazing. Seems like a lot of trouble, but they turned out perfect! I have only a front step, too.

    1. Thanks Liberty. It’s the pits having a small front porch area to work with. I would love to decorate it but with just a small space I don’t want it crowded. The sign is a perfect size. Now I would most likely go out find wood cuts outs for the other seasons unless I want something special I can’t find. It really wasn’t that hard.

  4. Terrie this is an awesome idea! I love how easy it looks! I can’t wait to make one for my porch!

    1. Danya it would look so pretty on your porch. It was easy enough to change it up to fit your decor. I love sharing cute ideas to everyone.

Thanks for joining in on the fun. Happy July!

    1. Thanks Michelle. It was so easy to create, with buying the letters all you have to do is paint them the color you want and glue them on. How easy. Love the little wooden ornaments to change out when I want. It’s a fun little project to make.

    1. I was wanting something that could be placed out on our porch and not having to be removed with the season’s decorating. I love how it looks on our porch and how cute the little ornament pieces give to the sign.

    1. You are so welcome Christine! Thanks for joining in, I always have fun working with you.

Thanks, I love how cute the sign is and how fun it will be changing out the little ornaments for the seasons.

    1. Thank you Paula! I always wanting something that was proper size for our small porch. This will work perfect and will be so fun changing the little wood pieces out each season.

  5. Hi Terrie,

Thanks for hosting again! This sign is great and I love that you are making it seasonal. How fun is that going to be? Love both the watermelon and pumpkin. The watermelon with the bite taken out is perfect.

    1. Thank you Jodi! I love how it looks on our porch too. It is the perfect size, which is why a DIY works better we can make to fit!

  6. Terrie how cute! I love how you got the “bite” out of the watermelon… you are going to have so much fun creating all of the seasonal items to put on your cute sign!

    1. I wasn’t for sure how I was going to make the bite mark. When I drew it out when I had the drill out to drill the holes for the hanger it dawned on me that the drill might work. Yep….it did or at least it was good for me! Thank you!
