DIY KEEPSAKE SNOWMAN ORNAMENT

Hey there!! I hope y’all had an amazing Thanksgiving!!  We had a wonderful Thanksgiving, Mr. Tip and I went down to our son, Todd’s home along with our daughter, Kristin and her family.  We spent the whole Thanksgiving weekend together, we had such an amazing time with our family.  Even though Thanksgiving was different than years past, we enjoyed ourselves even more.  We didn’t rush our Thanksgiving dinner to look at the Black Friday’s sale ads nor did we rush off to the stores, we sat around the dinner table visiting and ended the evening watching a Hallmark Christmas movie.  Even Mr. Tip watched it with us. 🙂

How was your Thanksgiving?  Did you do anything different from years past?

If you are coming over from Liberty, B4 and Afters wasn’t her Christmas filled ornament look amazing?  I love how creative she is!  If you have followed my blog, you know the first Wednesday of the month I host the DIY Challenge. I gathered a group of bloggers who love to create budget friendly décor for their homes too. 🙂  For the December’s challenge I asked my friends to take a clear ornament and show how they can create a beautiful Christmas decoration.  At the bottom of my page I will have all of my friend’s links to their blogs so you can go check out their Christmas creations.

I have seen many different ways to create adorable ornaments using an inexpensive clear ball ornament, I am happy to be bringing you some of the cutest ones here on our DIY clear ornament challenge.  For my DIY ornament I am not taking all the credit, I had help creating mine from Miss Kehlani, we are going to make a special ornament to hang on our Christmas tree, you might just have a special someone to help you with yours!!

Supplies I used:

  • clear plastic ornaments
  • white, orange, black and brown craft paint
  • Epsom salt
  • super glue
  • twine
  • minwax polyurethane

We made 4 ornaments, one for myself and one to give Kehlani’s mommy, her GiGi and her Uncle Todd.

How to make a hand print snowmen ornament

I poured some white paint onto a plate, I pressed Kehlani’s hand into the paint and pressed it onto the ornament.

Didn’t she do an amazing job?  I placed them in a coffee cup while they dried.

Since her job was finished, she decided to play on the floor while I finished up with the snowmen.

I started adding details to the hand print, I painted on a carrot nose with orange paint.

After the nose I placed two dots for the eyes with black craft paint.

For the mouth I added 4 little dots in the shape of a smile.

Down each of her finger prints I added three dots to resemble buttons.

The last little details to the snowmen I made lines to create sticks for the arms with brown craft paint.

To remember this special time we created the ornament I wrote her name and year at the bottom of her hand print.

I took the ornaments apart and added 3 tablespoons of Epsom salt to one side. Since I wasn’t at home I didn’t have any of my supplies on hand, I would have added glitter in with the Epsom salt to have a glittery effect.

To secure the ornament together and from coming apart I added two dabs of hot glue to one of the ornament sides then connected the two parts together.

I brushed on Minwax poly to the painted side of the ornament to seal the design, let dry and added a piece of white twine for the hanger.

Ornaments like these are priceless.

We placed Uncle Todd’s on his tree.

  1. How adorable and fun is this, Terrie! You two made the cutest ornaments! Looking back when your grand daughter is old enough to appreciate time with her grandmother, I’m sure the two of you will always cherish these moments together!

  2. This is such a cute ornament and one that I know will be treasured by everyone that you made one for. One of my boys made one like this a number of years ago in school but it was on a red ball ornament, not clear. I like the addition of the epsom salts inside the ornament.

    1. Thanks Tara. I love this ornament, I am sure we will be making more ornaments in the future. Will have to set up a tree just for all of her ornaments. ha!

  3. Oh my goodness, Terrie! Your ornaments are so precious as is your sweet granddaughter for helping her Gma! I love creating with the littles and the idea of making a keepsake ornament is not only a thoughtful gift, like you said it’s also priceless! Awesome job! And thank you as always for all you do to put this challenge together! P.S. So glad you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

    1. Christine you are so welcome, I should thank you for participating in the challenge. It’s always fun working with you!

I have to say this ornament will be front and center every year on our tree, no matter what theme or color I place on it. She was such a great little helper. Not to fond of the paint on her hand but she let me do the 4 ornaments before she grew tired of it all. ha!

      1. Oh Terrie this is so precious and sentimental. what a special ornament this will be for the family. Her little hands made cute snowmen. This is what it’s all about, family.

I’m gushing here but can’t help myself. Pinning definitely.

Thanks for hosting this fun challenge.

        Cindy

  4. How precious is this! I loved how you sealed the design. I’ve never used a plastic ornament because I wasn’t sure how to seal it. Great tip.

    1. Thanks Tammy! I wasn’t too sure about sealing it either but I knew it had to be sealed. Was going to use Modge Podge but didn’t have it. The poly worked great with a thin coat.
