This is the first Wednesday of the month which means we are anxious to share November’s DIY Challenge.  This month we are working with glass containers.  The rules are very simple, decorate any glass container anyway you want.

There are so many possibilities to use glass containers in your home.  On this challenge I hope you find some cool ways to use any type of glass vases, jars or dishes to incorporate in your home.

For my project, I wasn’t too sure what I wanted to do until I saw an advertisement for Crate and Barrel one day.  I click the button TO SHOP,  I scanned through their site and saw this set of candle holders/lanterns.  They would look amazing on my dining room table this Christmas season.  Here is the picture of the candle holder/lanterns.

Aren’t they beautiful?  The price of only one was a little….well, a lot more than what I wanted to spend since I would need two.  So I put my creative cap on….I studied the lanterns and then I scanned Dollar Tree to see what items I could use to make the lanterns as close to the ones above.

I have it all planned out!!  I can’t wait to share my version of the candle holder/ lantern.  Let’s get started before I bust!

Items you would need 2 make two candle holders

  • 2 round frame mirrors – Dollar Tree
  • 4 metal wreath holders – Dollar Tree
  • 2 metal album rings
  • 2 large glass containers – Walmart
  • power grab
  • paint

Here is how I made my candle holders:

I took the metal wreath door holder, bending them straight.  They are not a heavy duty metal so it was easy to bend with your hands.

I used Mr. Tip’s lineman’s pliers to cut the metal strip to size.  I really didn’t cut the metal I used the pliers to bend back and forth until it broke off itself.

Cutting at the second line from the bottom.  (the part you would place over the door).

Making the shape wasn’t hard since I used a vinegar jug.  A 3 liter soft drink bottle would be perfect.

To keep both bars the same shape I placed them together to bend in shape.  I placed the end of the bar (where the hook use to be) at the second bend mark placing it on the cap of my jug.

I started bending the bar the shape of my jug.

I think the shape turned out pretty close to my inspiration lantern.

I measured the top of my bar 1/2 inch down from the edge and in the center marking a dot.  I drilled a hole into each bar.

Placing the bars in a line to make sure all are the same shape and height.

Now to grab the mirrors, take the backing and mirror out of the frames.

Put the backing and mirrors to the side for now.  It’s time to paint your mirror frame, bars and binder hooks the color you want.

I spray painted mine white.

Taking the binder and  two of the bars.

Place the binder through the drilled holes.  I wanted the hinge of the binder to be in between the two bars.  I used each side of the binder, with one bar to the left and the other to the right.  Making sure the hinge is in the middle.

Next take the mirror frame and turn it to the back.  Find the part of the mirror where there is a 1 inch space.  There should be one right across from the other.

Use your power grab or whatever glue you want to use and fill in the space with glue.

Add both of the ends of the bars to each space.  Clean off any excess glue.

Let that sit for several hours.

So what do you think so far?  Pretty neat huh?

To make the bottom sturdy to hold the glass vase I am going to place the mirror back to the frame.  Adding some power grab to the inside of the frame and add the mirror.

Gently remove the little wall hanger from the back of the frame.

To have the backing fit properly on the base, I marked each side of the bar and notched out a little section to fit snug around each bar.

Add power grab to the mirror and place the backing in place.

I applied some white paint to the black base and gave the entire holder a quick spray of white paint to touch up all the little scratches.  I also dry brushed some caramel craft paint to the lantern for a distressed look.

I was going to use a Dollar Tree glass vase but it was too thin for my holder.  I shopped Walmart glass shelf and found two 8 inch glass vases to place in my holder.

I will be placing the two on my dining room table for Christmas.  I am so happy how they turned out.

Let’s take a look at the inspirational lanterns.

    1. Thanks Danya. I love the candle holder and how it turned out with just a few items at the Dollar Tree. Thanks for joining the DIY challenge this month. I always love working with you.

  1. I absolutely love your version. So creative. These would be great on the patio in the summer time too. Definitely pinning so I can make my own lanterns and hang on our newly covered back deck.

    1. Thank you Kelli. I would say hanging them outside would be so cute, but worried about the weight unless you put them together with a screw. Unless you don’t use the glass, which I probably wouldn’t if hanging them. Love working with you on this DIY challenge. I love your glass DIY.

  2. These look amazing! How creative!! I was so amazed at how you put this together. I can’t believe it all started with 2 wreath holders. I actually like your version much better.

    1. Thanks Michelle. After I figured out what to use it all went pretty smoothly. I wouldn’t be carrying the holder around by the handles with the glass inside but by itself it is very sturdy. Sitting on the table it holds the glass well. Thank you so much for your sweet comment Michelle. Love working with you on challenges.

    1. Thanks Darlene. To me they are pretty close to my inspiration. I wouldn’t be grabbing these by the handle with the vases tucked inside but they are pretty sturdy otherwise. Can’t wait to style them on my Christmas dining table.

    1. Awe! Thank you so much Donna. I appreciate your kindness. They really look pretty with the candle lite. I can’t wait to share how they look on my Christmas table in the dining room.

  3. Oh my goodness Terrie you hit a grand slam with these. I love how these turned out and they look like the inspiration pair just white. I like the white and can imagine how expensive these were from Crate and Barrel.

    Job well done my friend.

    1. Thank you so much Cindy. I surprised myself on how they turned out. I had fun searching for items to make them with at the Dollar Tree. The Walmart glass was half of the cost. I just love how they look. Thanks for stopping by!

    1. Thanks Jodi. I am pleased how they look. They are pretty sturdy, but I wouldn’t carry them around by the handle with the glass holder in them. Thanks for coming over my sweet friend.
