I am so excited to be starting my Fall DIYs and decorating for the 2020 Fall season. Today I am bringing a tutorial on a pumpkin planter.

This DIY planter can be made with all Dollar Tree items. I am using a few things I had on hand. I will list the other option you can purchased at Dollar Tree.
Supplies needed
- 2 Dollar Tree wood pumpkin cut outs with raise panels – Any wooden pumpkin cut out will work
- 1 Dollar Tree wooden tray
- 6 wooden shims – 6 Dollar Tree wooden rulers
- 2 pieces of pretty card stock – wrapping paper or gift bag from Dollar Tree would work perfectly
- 1 Dollar Tree wooden blend wreath
- white chalk paint – Crafter Square paint
- wallpaper paste or Mod Podge
- hot glue gun and sticks
- wood glue
- pretty fall ribbon
- zip tie
- floral wire
Planter Tutorial
Soaking the wooden wreath in water will soften the pieces up to form into a new shape.
I placed my piece of wreath in water. Soaking it in water will soften it up to be shaped into a handle for the planter.
I am using a piece of the wooden wreath left over from my Buffalo pumpkin wreath. I am taking a good piece of it to form a handle for my planter. If you are starting with a new wreath, cut the wreath in half and soak only one half in water.

For the fronts of my planter I am using two of the raised panel pumpkins from the Dollar Tree.
Removing the tags and the raffia bow.
If your pumpkin has raised panels like the one I am using, take the paper and place on top of the pumpkin.
To make the pattern of the raised panel, rub your finger over the panel to form an imprint of the shape onto the paper.
Cut on the lines. If your pumpkin doesn’t have panels you can cut your shapes to create the same look.
I painted both pumpkins with Waverly chalk paint color Plaster. Front and back.
I am using 6 wooden shims, I measured from the thin end of the shim 7 ½ inches. If you are using the Dollar Tree rulers, remove the ruler sticker and cut 7 ½ inches.
I used my Dollar Tree hack saw I cut each piece at the mark.
Sand the shims as smooth as you can, clean and paint each piece front and back with Waverly chalk paint in the color Plaster.
Painting the Dollar Tree wooden tray with the Waverly chalk paint, plaster as well.
I am painting the stems of my pumpkin with FolkArt metallic gold painting front and back of the stems.
To glue the cut patterns onto the pumpkin I am using border adhesive. I love using the paste vs the mod podge hands down. It’s more of a professional look, it’s only my opinion. Add the paste to the panel of the pumpkin and the back of the paper, apply to the pumpkin.
To give more details to the print I added lines of gold and blue to the white squares.
Everything is painted and ready to started putting the planter together.
Attaching the two pumpkins to the wooden tray by using wood glue and hot glue. I applied both glues to the sides of the tray.
Attach the back bottom portion of the pumpkin to the tray.
Keeping the sides even I used my ruler I placed three marks to the back side of the pumpkin. I marked 2 inches, 4 inches and 6 inches on each side of the pumpkins.
Using wood glue and hot glue I attached each shims to the pumpkins at the marks.
Remove the wreath parts from the water, dry it off and placed it between the two pumpkins, this will create the shape of a handle.
I painted the handle plaster to match the other parts of the planter. Applying wood and hot glue to each end and placed on the back of the stems. Securing the handles with floral wire. Placing it through the predrilled hole…
around the stem and back through the hole…
curled the ends to secure the wire.
I am placing a messing bow to one of the stems. Taking pieces of pretty ribbon and the raffia bow that came on the pumpkin using a zip tie to secure it onto the stem.
Take a look at my planter, it is soooo cute! 🙂
You could add greenery, flowers or small pumpkins to the planter. I added fall stems in mine.

If you don’t like pumpkins you could use anything for the front and back. Hearts for Valentines, Christmas ornaments for Christmas. Dollar Tree has so many ideas to use for this basket.
