Are you ready for inexpensive ways to decorate your home this Spring?  Today is the Under $10 on the 10th hop, here we share how you can create something under $10.   The blog hop is hosted each month by Tammy over at Patina and Paint, at the bottom of my page I will have all the blogger’s Spring projects linked for you.

Supplies to make your own topiary:

  • a large faux hydrangea
  • a straight twig from your yard or dowel rod
  • a small piece of faux ivy
  • container
  • a small piece of floral foam
  • a small amount of reindeer moss
  • hot glue
  • wire snips

 Hydrangea and Ivy DIY Topiary

Container

The container should be 1/2 the size in diameter of your hydrangea.  My container is a thrift store urn vase, it’s 4 inches in diameter.  Example:  My hydrangea is 8″ and my vase is 4″.

To watch my Facebook video of the before look and the process of me giving the vase a makeover click here → MAKEOVER.

Pack your container with floral form.

Stem

To create a stem, use a twig or dowel rod.  The length of your stem will determine how tall your topiary will be.

Flower

To create the topiary, snip the flower from its stem, also snip the leaves.

Hot glue the flower to the top of your twig and the leaves as well.

Container covering

To cover your floral foam with moss and around the stem to conceal the attachment of leaves.

Add Ivy

Finish the topiary with ivy.

Stick a piece of ivy into the foam, glue the vine to the twig to create the look of a climbing vine.

The inspirational topiary I found on Joss & Main site, it’s 8 times the cost of the one I created.

Let’s break down the cost.

  • container $1.50 (thrift store)
  • hydrangea stem $4.99 (Hobby Lobby 50% off)
  • twig $0 (twig from the yard)
  • ivy, foam and moss $0 (had on hand) Dollar Tree for $1.25 each = $3.75

  1. Terrie, This topiary is perfect for Spring and definitely has a variety of different places where it could be placed. A front entrance table is what comes to my mind next to family pictures. What a wonderful welcome. And it is a perfect copy of Joss and Main, but at a faction of the cost. It would make me want to make two and add it to a dining room buffet. So charming. Have a wonderful Easter holiday.

    1. Thank you, Marsha, all your ideas where to style the topiary sound perfect. Thank you for the sweet comment. Happy Easter to you and your family!

  2. Oh, Terrie I love this. So sweet! I know that I have a small urn like that somewhere in my closet. Definitely going to dig it out and give this craft a try. So pretty. Thank you so much for sharing another great idea!

    1. I am so happy I inspired you to make one of these, it was so easy to make and for the price it doesn’t break the bank. Thanks Tammy!
