MIRROR MIRROR AT THE THRIFT STORE

Hey there!  Welcome to our monthly Thrift Store Challenge.  This month, there are 7 of us sharing our thrift store finds or repurposing something we have sitting around our home.  I will share all of my friend’s blog links down at the bottom of my page for easy access to their thrift store find.  I am so excited to share with you what I found at a thrift store while visiting our son.  I wasn’t looking for anything special I was in there just browsing when there it was just leaning against a cage.

If you look past the mess it could have great potential.  I am hoping I can change the “Safari” look.  But first, I have to pay for it and get it home.  It was quite heavy.  Look how large it is…It took the whole back of my son’s vehicle

Even though I think I could use this mirror any where in our home, I had my daughter’s home in mind.  Let me show you what I plan to do to make this mirror something she would want in her home.

Something just made me feel like I should make sure it didn’t have any critters lurking around, I gave it a good dose of bug spray.

I removed the mirror from the frame.  Here is where you can see how much I paid for the mirror. 🙂

It had a rip that I need to fix.

What I was thinking to do is fill it with wood filler.  Maybe that will fix the problem.  I also filled some wood filler in a few chips and cracks in the frame as well.

Letting that sit over night.  I watched off and on to see if anything crawled out.  None…so we were good to go.

The next day I used 220 grit sand paper sanding the parts I filled in with wood filler and gave the whole mirror a light sanding.

To get the line effect in the wood filler I took a paper clip and carved lines.

Wiping down the frame to remove all the dust I spray paintied the whole frame with Rust-oleum metallic silver.

I gave it two coats.

I am not happy at all with how the wood filler spot turned out.  I used some spackle to the area in hopes that would work.

Let that dry for several hours and sanded.  I didn’t want to leave the whole frame silver so I am painting the Gesso matieral part of the frame with Behr paint in the color Overcast.

I painted three coats.  The patch work covered nicely.

I let that dry.  I still wasn’t totally happy with the look so I grabbed some Folkart paint in metallic sterling silver and added two coats to the gesso frame.

After that dried I used an Acrylic sealer.

Let that dry over night and placed the mirror back in the frame.

Can’t wait to see what it looks like in Kristin’s home.  We are thinking maybe for the vanity mirror in the guest half bathroom.  You know when we start giving that room a makeover you will be right there with me!

Do you think I took the safari out of the mirror?  I see some glam in it now.

  2. Hi Terrie I think this would look great for a vanity mirror. Way to persevere. Joint compound is like magic besides paint of course.
