MY $5.00 THRIFT STORE COFFEE TABLE MAKEOVER

Hello friends!  Today is the reveal day of my thrift store gem.  I spent most of my day Friday painting the table.  I used Waverly Chalk paint for the first time.  My thoughts…..the prep was very easy but I had to give it 4 coats before I was happy with it.  I do like how it turned out.  I thought I would share with you how I revamped this coffee table.

The first thing I needed to do was removed the price sticker and the brass trim piece.  I clean the table really good with just soap and water.

Like I said before I am using Waverly chalk paint.  Cashew and Celery.  I purchased the paint from Wal-mart.  I purchased a Waverly brush for chalk paint also.

My thought was paint the first coats with the Cashew and the last coats with the celery so when I distress the piece some of the cashew color will show.

First two coats was with the Cashew.

Let’s get started!

My first disappointment was the brush.  Maybe I needed to get a better brush, but I was fighting the bristles, they were coming off and and in the paint on my table.  Fighting that was so aggravating.

In the directions it says no need to prep the furniture just start painting.  The first coat looked more like a primer coat.

Waited 2 hours and started the second coat.

Second coat done!  If this was the only color I would have to do a couple more coats because it wasn’t 100% covered.

Third coat I changed to the Celery paint.  It is a real pretty color.

First coat done!

Waited 2 hours and painted one more coat.

Next step is the distressing part.  I took 220 grit sandpaper and distressed the table.  After the sanding I wiped it down with a damp cloth.

I used polyurethane instead of the chalk wax.  The reasoning is because I am using this out on our back patio and didn’t know about how well the wax would protect it.  I painted two coats.  First coat, sanded lightly and applied the second coat.

Now it is time to work on the places where the glass inserts were missing.  I wanted to put a cushion insert there.  My husband measured and cut the boards for me.

While he was cutting the boards I spray painted the brass strips a bronze color.  That is the color we painted the patio furniture.  I thought that would look better than the brass.

Now to cover the boards.

I had some left over material from when I upholstery the outdoor furniture last year.

I cut a piece of foam cushion the size of the board.  I also cut a piece of fabric larger than the foam and insert.  I placed the fabric face down and the foam and board on top.

I always start to staple the fabric in the center of each side.

Making sure that everything is nice and tight I start stapling down each side leaving the corners open.

Now the corners.  This is the tricky part.

Pull the corner toward you, bring the sides joining together.

Pull the corner over the top, making sure you pull all the wrinkles out of the corner.

Staple down, cut the excess off and staple one last time.

Do this to all 4 sides.

I did the other insert.

I placed the sprayed bronze trim piece back on the table top.

I placed the inserts on top of the table.

I will be placing this on our back porch.  I wanted the coffee table for a couple of reasons.  For more sitting area when needed and a place I can rest my feet while sitting on the swing.

I styled the table just for you!  I can’t wait to style it on our back screened porch soon!

What do you think?  I just love my material with the celery green.  You can’t really tell in the picture the little peaks of yellow (Cashew).  I really do love the looks of this table.

Thank you so much for coming by today.  I hope you come back to my next blog.  I enjoy your visits and hope you enjoy coming as much.
