Our inspiration this month comes from Mary’s porch.  You can check Mary over at Home is where the boat is by clicking HERE.

I finally cleaned the back porch.  YAY!  What better timing since our Pinterest inspiration was an outdoor space.  For my challenge, I will be using our porch swing.  One way to decorate a space inexpensively would be throw pillows.   Making pillows is a great way to keep it budget friendly.  Today, I am going to share how you can make a felt Dahlia flower pillow case. It cost only a few bucks to make.

Before I list all the supplies I want to share with you the pattern I used to make the petals.

I took a piece of paper, ruler and a pencil.  This pillow cover will fit a 16 inch pillow.

I made 4 different size petals.  Here are the patterns I came up with.  Click on the photo to save to your computer and then print it out. Hopefully you will be able to use my template, if not I wrote all the measurements.

I cut all 4 petals out.  I rounded the points out when cutting the pattern. This is what my petal patterns look like.

Here are the supplies you will need:

  • ¼ of a yard of felt
  • ½ of a yard of material
  •  button
  •  sewing machine or fabric glue
  •  straight pins
  •  scissors
  • thread
  •  16 inch pillow to fill your pillow cover.

For the petals here are the numbers you will need to cut for each pattern:

  • 20 petals marked #1
  • 20 petals marked #2
  •  15 petals marked #3
  • 8 petals marked #4
  •  One  3″ x 3″ x 1″  X.  (I free handed the X)

Put the petals to the side, we will be working on the pillow cover.

I measured out a 17 inch square for the pillow front.  For the back,  I measured 2 pieces; 17 inches x 9 inches.

I am using a sewing machine but you can use fabric glue if you would like.  I zigzagged both pieces at one long edge and folded it over and stitched a hem.

Place the two panels to the side.  Now take the front panel, place it pattern side facing up.  We will need to make 4 circles to the center.  You need to make an 8 inch, 6 inch, 4 inch and a 2 inch circle.  The circles will not show, it is your guide line for the petals.

Getting the felt petals, we will be shaping the petals, we will need to grab the sewing machine or the fabric glue.  We will do this to all of the petals.  Keeping each size in their group.

Here are the steps to create the petal shape.

  1. use the smaller end of the petal
  2. folding each end to the middle – for fabric glue.  Add two dabs of glue and fold to the middle.
  3. pin together
  4. stitch across

I used a white thread to show you, but you will want to use the color of your felt.

To attach you pedals to the front cover.  I started with 4 petals at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock.  I pinned them to the outer circle with the stitch on the line.  Stitch the petals on.  Or you can glue them to the front pinning until the glue dries.

Line up the stitch on the petal with the designated line.

After you attached all the petals we will add the center to the flower.  Taking the cut out X and a button attach to the center.  I sew the two by hand (or you can glue) to the center.

Now we will attach the two small panels to the pillow front.  Keeping the flower facing up, place the two back panels pattern side down with the hem to the center.  Pin the sides together, making sure the petals are not pinned.

Stitch around the pillow.  Turn the pillow case inside out making sure you push out the corners and slip your pillow inside.

Now to share my version of the Pinterest challenge.

The bicycle and home pillows were purchased from Walmart.  I just love the two together.

  1. Terrie this is just adorable! I love your dahlia pillow and the Walmart pillows too! Your porch is looking great for summer. Great idea to use the swing for this challenge.

I hope you enjoy this porch all summer long!

    1. Thank you so much Amber. I am thinking of doing more of those pillows for other holidays. It can be easily changed by just the flower. I am already enjoying the warmer weather. Thank you I wish you a wonderful summer as well.

  2. Terrie, what a great tutorial. I wish I were crafty. This would be a fun pillow to add to my mix of patriotic pillows. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thanks Sarah. I love how this pillow turned out. I will be making a couple more for different seasons. A mum for the fall and poinsettia for Christmas. I love the look of the flower pillow. Even a sunflower for summer. Skies the limit. 🙂

  3. Terrie, your dahlia pillow is a work of art. I love making and using pillows for our home. They add so much character to any setting. Your love seat looks very inviting. Love the bright red throw. The checkerboard set is a cute addition. Very creative.

    1. Thank you Carol. I love how the pillow turned out and will be making some for other holidays. Pillows are always a great way to decorate indeed. My son, now grown up and moved on his own, and husband would sit almost every night and play checkers on that. I am hoping when he comes here to visit they will pull it out and play a game or two.

  4. Terrie, I can’t wait to make your Dalhia pillow! Wow! This is doable and oh, so pretty! I’d love to come and sit a bit just to take in all your red, white and blue inspiration!

    1. Oh I am so happy you will be making one of those pillows for yourself. Please tag me so I can see how you use yours. Thank you so much for your sweet comments. Thanks for stopping over.

  5. Terrie, you’re a girl after my own heart! I love making DIY decor for every occasion. I would definitely try your pillow tutorial. It’s too cute! Your instructions are very clear and easy to follow, too. The pillow looks fabulous in your 4th of July vignette, along with all of your other special touches. So clever!

    1. Thank you Crissy. I hope when you make it you will tag me in your picture. I would love to see how yours turns out. Thank you for stopping by.

  6. Your entire patriotic display is so festive! I love your pillows and especially love the Dahlia pillow that you showed us how to make. The boots with the flag in them are a great added touch to your patriotic display. I hope that you can enjoy this area many times between now and July 4.

  7. Terrie, I love your dahlia pillow. Where do you come up with your ideas? Wonderfully creative and so pretty!!! I love how you’ve used it in your decor. It’s funny, but as I was looking at the red stripes and the circles together, I wondered if it was hard for you to sew…

I only mention this as I have a mild case of what’s called Irlen Syndrome/Scotopic Sensitivity (timing issue between eyes and brain; causes letters and sometimes numbers to “lift” off the page and float. A reading specialist can help identify it.) As I was trying to look at the circles, the rings were flying!! Lol! Thought I’d mention this in case any of your readers or their children have a similar issue ~ it’s correctible with colored overlays or with tinted lenses in glasses making reading and doing math problems easier.

Love the old boots, too, and the cute pillows from Walmart.
    Really fun styling,
    Barb 🙂

    1. Thank you for your comment. It was a little busy until I used a black sharpie to outline the circle. I could see where that would give someone trouble. Maybe a different pattern or even a solid would be easier to work with. The flower itself is pretty enough to make the pillow.

  8. This pillow tutorial for a dahlia RWB cover is wonderful, Terrie! Love how you used so many pillows to bring your patriotic decor to life! Pinned! (I so want to make one fo these!)

    1. Thank you Julie. I think I have enough pillows in my closet to fill a whole room. I started buying and making pillow covers. They are so easy to store than the whole pillow. I can’t wait to see how your pillow turns out. Thanks for pinning it!

  9. You amaze me with your crafty talents Terrie. The pillow looks so fun but way to much for me to do. Maybe I can just find a big flower and glue it to an already existing pillow instead? LOL. That seems more my skill set. Loved how your PC challenge turned out. So festive and fun. I’d love sitting there playing checkers! Thanks so much for joining in.

    1. Cindy I have seen some of your DIYs and you my dear could do it but I love your idea about buying a large flower. That would be cute also. Thanks for hosting the Pinterest Challenge, as always it was a lot of fun!

    1. Thank you Laura. I can’t wait for you to share how your pillow turned out. I am thinking about making more for other Holidays. Hope you have a great weekend!

  10. Super cute Dahlia pillow, Terrie! And great tutorial. Pinned to my sewing ideas board! Great collection of pillows all around; nice to mix store bought and DIY together, indeed!

  11. Terrie this very pretty. Personally I think this is better to be seen. Glue and pins would be messy. Your tutorial is great.

Your porch looks great and the bicycle pillow is wonderful.

Hope you enjoyed your Memorial day.

    Cindy

    1. Thank you Cindy. I saw it done both ways and thought it would hold up better sewn. It wasn’t no trouble sewing and love how it turned out. Thank you I hope you had a great holiday as well.

  12. Honey, there is so much eye candy there I don’t know what I’m coming to your house to take first!! I love that pillow you made, that is gorgeous!! The boots with the flags…just leaves me speechless! Hope you have a great day! Hugs!
