SHOW ME YOUR COUCH ALL DRESSED UP AND I WILL SHOW YOU MINE!

Hello friends!  Welcome!  Thanks for joining me today.  I thought it was time to bring back my Show Me series.  It has been over a month since my last Show me blog.  If you haven’t seen my Series yet, please go check it out HERE.  Be sure to come back to see how I dressed my couch up.

How is your week going?  Can you believe that October is almost over?  My gosh how this month flew by.  It has been beautiful weather here.  Harder for me to get up in the mornings with the cooler weather and it still being dark out when I have to get up.  Maybe after the time changes it will be easier.  That will be another adjustment for me.  TIME CHANGE! UGH!

Let’s get started with this Show me session.  Show me your couch all dressed up and I will show you mine!

An empty couch is like a bare wall that has no life, add a picture to the wall and it livens it up.  Adding pillows to a couch can work the same way.

I love a couch with pillows and a throw.  I always wonder how many pillows to use and how to place them on the couch.  Are you like me and have trouble making your pillows look the way you pictured in your mind?

I want to share some tips with you on how to arrange pillows on your couch.  The first thing you have to find out is what style you like.  If you are like me you might like them all.  You might have your own style and that is great, these are just a few popular styles.

  • Modern style-this normally is done with odd number of pillows, large solid or large geometric prints.  *Tip:  Using a couple larger pillows are better than a bunch of smaller pillows.

Example of a modern style:

  • Traditional style-using even number of pillows with a symmetry look.   Laying and using textures, patterns, and colors.

Example of a traditional style:

  • Electric style-using uneven number of pillows in multitude of fabrics, patterns, textured or both.

On RealSimple.com I read this article about throw pillows. I thought it was interesting and wanted to share this portion with you.

Decorator Tips on Picking the Right Throw Pillows for Your Room

  • Consider size. Standard squares (about 18 inches) nest neatly on sofas with typical dimensions. Oversize pillows (24 inches) create a more casual, loungey feel. If you have a modern sofa with a very low back, consider 16 inches.
  • Know about fill. A feather-and-down fill has more squish, and it’s also the priciest. Foam and other synthetic fills are stiffer. They hold their shape but look less lush.
  • Use an odd number of pillows. In design, odd numbers tend to be more artful. Try one, three, or five, depending on the size of your furniture and the look you want (one for a chair, three or five for a standard 88-inch sofa).
  • Create a mixed “pillowscape.” An easy combo: a matched pair of square solids that contrast with the color of your sofa, one oblong pillow for the center of the couch, and two interesting outliers—patterned, embellished, or oddly shaped—that reference either the color of your upholstery or the color of your solid pillows.
  • Don’t forget about texture. Tactile contrast—nubby linen against smooth leather or silk upholstery, or shiny pillows on a fuzzy couch—add warmth and offer traction, so pillows don’t slide off seats.
  • Address the whole room. Think of a living room’s pillows as a family. The pillow on a chair doesn’t have to match the group on the sofa, but if it relates in some way—palette, style—the space feels unified and polished.

Here is my blank canvas. This is our living room couch.  We have a Flex Steel Leather Reclining sofa. The color is saddle brown.

I clean my leather furniture with Bayers Leather cleaner once every 3 months.  It is real easy to use.  I use a cheese cloth and just wipe it down.  It gently cleans, conditions and prevents drying and cracking.  I found my bottle at TjMaxx, but you can also purchase it at Wal-mart.

Pottery Barn’s website How to Decorate a leather couch states that dark tones of a brown or black leather sofa is considered neutral, and matches with practically anything.  I would of never thought my couch would be a neutral.
I have to say again by looking at my bare couch (in my opinion) makes the room feel like it is missing a huge part of the decor.  Just adding back my pillows made the room decor alive again.
Our couch isn’t used on a daily basis so the pillows stay put for the most part.  When we do have company I remove the pillows and place them on a bed in the spare bedroom.

Here is what my couch looks like everyday.

The faux fur throw I purchased from TjMaxx. I draped it over one corner.

I started with 2 matching 20″ soft pink distressed square pillows, I placed each resting against the couch arms. I found the pillows at Kirkland’s (they are on clearance right now for $11.22 each)

I placed two 20″ light beige linen with a white embroidered design pillows next to the pink distressed pillows.

In the center I placed a large 24″ Modern Greek Key soft pink pillow.

The last pillow is the textured oblong pillow.  We always need to have a pillow with some interest!

That is how my pillows are placed on my couch.  I know you are thinking……where can anyone sit?  I understand this wouldn’t work for everyone.  Remember, we don’t use our couch much and when we do we just pull the pillows off.  It doesn’t take that much effort.

I would love to hear from you on how you dressed your couch up.  Did this help you with your pillow placement?  Let me know what you think?

For the holidays use your pillows as a statement piece.  You can easily change your pillows with pillow covers.  They are very reasonable and easy to store when you are not using them.  They just slip right over your everyday pillows.  I will be purchasing some for my Christmas season, for sure!

Now grab your pillows and go play and design your couch arrangement.  Make it your own statement piece.

As always thank you so much for stopping by. Don’t forget to sign up for my NEVER MISS A POST to receive all the latest from Decorate and More with Tip.  Remember to share my website site with some of your friends!

Enjoy the rest of your week my friends!

Stay strong and stay blessed!

Terrie
