With July 4th coming up I decided for this month’s Pinterest challenge I want to do a holiday piece.  Looking through my Pinterest pins for some inspiration I found several cute July 4th shutter décor.  I am so excited because I have a shutter just sitting up in my attic waiting to be used.  To see my inspirational pin you can click HERE.

I am listing several of my friend’s links at the end of my page for you to see all the cool things they have been working on for the Pinterest Challenge this month.

Here are the items I will be using with my shutter.

  • Shutter
  • red, blue and white paint
  • burlap July 4th ribbon
  • hot glue and glue gun
  • paint brush
  • star template
  • 220 grit sandpaper

Let’s get started!

I took my white paint and painted the sides of my shutter.

I painted the top part and the first three slats blue.

I alternated every three slats red and white, painting the last slate white.

I made a star template and traced it on the blue part of my shutter.  I am painting it white.

Outlined my star with red.

Using 220 grit sandpaper I am distressing the shutter.

Taking a roll of Dollar Tree burlap stars and stripes ribbon and roughing up the edges.

To rough up the edges of your burlap you can check my tutorial here DIY BURLAP TABLE RUNNER.  I didn’t throw the threads away I will be using them next.

I am using my hot glue gun to add the ribbon and threads to the shutter.

I took the bundle of thread and hot glued it down the side of the shutter.

I took the ribbon and hot glued it down on top of the thread.

I made a bow and attached it to the top of the shutter.

It really wasn’t that hard and didn’t take long, drying time took the longest.  I am not too sure where my shutter will be place, but for now it is standing in my son’s flowerbed out front.

  1. LOVE THIS! I saw one in a catalog recently, and I have been thinking about going down to my favorite flea market in search of a shutter (or two) that I can do this to.

  2. Your shutter is too cute! I’ll keep your blog in mind when I want to rough up some burlap ribbon- I buy it often and used that same roll on my Americana Mantel for the May Pinterest Challenge!

  3. Super cute. Love the little curly cues and ribbon decorating the length of the shutter. Are shutters expensive? Would love to make one of these. Great idea to distress the wood to give it a vintage feel. Really lovely.

    1. Thank you Leslie. They use to be real reasonable, they are harder to find and when I do see them they are either plastic or expensive. If you have a Habitat close by I would check in there.

    1. Thanks so much Julie. My shutter had a lot of flaws so distressing it helped to camouflage. The had all those loose threads that I was going to throw out. After I gathered them I thought it might look good placing under my ribbon. Thanks for your kind words.

    1. Thanks you so much Joanne. I have a small porch and trying to find cute ideas for decorating our porch is always a challenge. I am glad I gave you an idea for yours.

    1. Thank you Cherryl. I was sweeping up the mess after roughing out the ribbon. I hate to throw things away. I thought it might look kind of cool using it under the ribbon. Doesn’t hurt to try right?

  6. Using recycle items makes projects that much more exciting especially when they turn out great! I love the look of alternating red white and blue colors on the slats.

    1. I have had the shutter several years. It use to be one tall one, I cut it in half and have changed it’s color several times. Love the look paint does to an item. Thank you Gail. I had a great time hopping with you!

  7. Terri a great use of a shutter from your attack. This is my kind of piece to use for a challenge, using what you already have on hand.
