UPDATING MY PICNIC BASKET

Welcome friends!  It’s time for another 10 on the 10th inspiration.  This month we are sharing some cool ideas for outdoor activities, such as picnics and BBQs.  We all love spending time with family and friends, don’t we?  The two things go hand in hand, right?

I am excited to be hosting this month.  I have the perfect thing to share with you today!  To go on a picnic you have to have the most important essential, the picnic basket !!  I have to laugh when I hear the word picnic basket.  It reminds me of Yoga Bear saying “Hey Boo Boo, let’s go get us a pic-a-nic basket”.

I have had this picnic basket for decades, it has been tucked up in the attic for a long time.  When we decided on what our topic was for this month I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I brought the basket down from the attic and started working to make it function again.

We used this basket when we owned a boat, I would pack it up with our lunches while we were boating.

It is a sturdy basket but the lining is stained and it has no place to store any utensils.  I thought what a better time to give this basket a makeover than now.

Here is what I plan to do with my old picnic basket.

  1. Make a new liner
  2. Give the basket a new coat of paint
  3. Add some storage for utensils
  4. Make a closure for the lid

First thing is to remove the old liner.  It was easy, I just pried one of the corners loose and then pulled it right off the basket.

I used my seam ripper and took the liner apart at the seams.

I purchased a yard of outdoor fabric from Walmart under $4.00.  Using outdoor fabric would be the best since I can wipe it down when it gets soiled.

I placed the old lining pieces on the new fabric, cut out the pieces and stitched the way the old lining was.

While the lining was out of the basket I gave the basket a coat of white paint and distressed it a little.

I put the new center liner into the basket with hot glue.

Before I placed the two top parts back on my basket I wanted to make something to hold utensils and plates.  I purchase a spool of Dollar Tree blue ribbon to make holders for both.  With one topper liner I took the ribbon and a plastic fork, measured, pinned and stitched little loops in the ribbon.

I made a little single loop for a bottle opener or whatever utensil I need to pack.  I added little buttons for decorations.   I hot glued the topper onto the lid.

On the other lid cover I added 4 pieces of ribbon to hold paper plates.

Now for the closure.  I looked at the top to see what I could attach to keep the lids closed, but to hot glue something to the basket wouldn’t hold very long.  I decided to grab one of my pony tail holder (it’s a new one 🙂 ).  I also took the extra fabric and stitched up a little scarf.  I tied the scarf to the holder.  There you have it.  A closure that works and looks pretty darn cute, if I say so myself.

That’s it!!
