A SIMPLE OUTDOOR LANTERN CHANGE

I adore decorating with lanterns, they should be a home décor staple piece.  Another thing is they can be easily changed to fit your room’s décor.  For an example, I am sharing the lantern I changed below.

Hey there!  If you are coming over from Rebecca at Zucchini Sisters, welcome to Decorate and More with Tip!  Didn’t her wreath looks amazing?

It’s time for another monthly Creative Craft. This month we have 14 crafters sharing some awesome crafts.  The Creative craft hop is hosted by Chloe, Celebrate and Decorate and Andrea, Design Morsel.  At the bottom of my page I will share each participant’s link to their craft.

For a couple years now, I have placed two copper lanterns on our back porch. I love sitting in the evening on the porch with them on.  Sadly, they are beginning to rust and need to be replace.

I found outdoor plastic lanterns to replace the copper lanterns, since they are plastic, they can sustain the moisture and won’t rust.

Check out how I changed the white lanterns to fit my porch décor.

The first thing was to remove the glass panels from the lantern.  I removed the 4 small screws that holds the bottom part of the lantern.

Remove the glass panels out of the lantern.

Paint the grids in the color of your choice.  I am using Apple Barrel paint in the color of pavement.

To remove the unwanted paint use a damp cloth and wipe carefully.

To protect my painted grids, I used Minwax Polycrylic protective finish.

After the poly dries, place the glass panels back into the lantern and add the bottom back on.

Very easy to do and look how different it looks!  It gives the lantern a classy look.

  1. I see lanterns at the thrift stores, but walk away because of the color. Painting the grids was a great idea, and really made a big difference.
    Thanks for the idea!

  2. These look great, Terrie! I also love decorating with lanterns and your idea to paint those grids really make them pop. So creative!

  3. Terrie, it’s amazing what a big impact painting the grids made! They definitely look classy. I love to decorate with lanterns, too. They are so versatile! It was fun hopping with you 🙂

  4. Oh wow, Terrie, that looks great! It looks so much better than how it came all white! You did such a great job painting it! I know I would not have been able to paint that so neat and tidy as you did. It is amazing what a difference that little bit of paint made!

  5. A small update makes a big difference! Enjoy your holiday weekend. We live not too far from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and will be hearing the race cars That’s as close as I want to get to the crowds. ha!

  6. Love these Terrie! Great idea to use plastic; metal doesn’t last long in our neck of the woods at all so this is a great option!

  7. What a great idea with such a huge impact. Love how it turned out. Such a cute idea Terrie! Thank you so much for sharing and wonderful crafting with you

  8. The Pavement painted grids really make the lanterns look great Terrie, the dark and light contrast adds drama and style! I have a lantern that needs a makeover, thank you for the inspiration!

  9. I never would have thought of painting the grid. It looks like something you would see in London. I tried painting the glass on my lanterns and had a heck of a time getting it back in. Thanks for sharing!

    1. I have seen painting the glass too. I bet your lantern looks great. I was thinking about frosting the glass in one of mine but never did.

    1. Thanks Gail. I wanted to add more to the lantern without painting the whole thing. I do like the look of the grids being painted.
