HOW TO STENCIL AN ACCENT WALL

Today will be the last of the DIYs for my $100 Room Challenge ~ Master bathroom.  The focal walls I wanted to address are getting finished.  Working on the long window wall and the wall behind the bathroom toilet.  After this I can start decorating my room.  YAY!!

For the focal walls I decided to stencil the two walls.  Here are the two walls now.

Since I decided to stencil both walls I reached out to Cutting Edge Stencil.  They were kind enough to send me their Trellis Allover Stencil for our Master bathroom.  Looking through and choosing from all their stencils was such a difficult chore.  They have so many beautiful styles.  I narrowed it down to a trellis type style.  After looking at all of the certain types I finally picked one.  I was so excited when my stencil arrived.  They carefully packaged it so it wouldn’t have any marks from shipping it to me.  I took it out of the package and kept it flat until I was ready to use it.

Cutting Edge Stencils also sent me a Stencil Essential Kit for an easier application.  Boy, did they send the right tools to help me with the process.  A clip on level, stencil brush and a foam roller with handle.

Let’s get to stenciling my bathroom walls, shall we?

Things you will need to stencil a wall.

  • Cutting Edge Stencil
  • Stencil Essential Kit ~ foam roller with handle, stencil brush and a level
  • Painter’s tape
  • Stencil Adhesive ~ I didn’t use it due to my walls being textured.
  • Paint tray
  • Paper towels
  • Water and clean cloth
  • Paint

For those that know me, you know that I am not one to go for the simple things in life.  With my walls I am going to use three different paint colors for my wall design.  The paint I had on hand.

  • Perfect Greige is the wall paint in our Master bedroom
  • Pure Earth is on the walls in the rest of our home
  • Edgecomb Gray is the cabinet color in the Master bathroom and the furniture in the Master bedroom
  • DIY Seattle Gray is the base wall color.  Keeping that on hand for any touch ups I will have.

First thing I wanted to do was find the center of the wall.  I wanted to start my design in the center.  I measured the wall and place an X in the center with painter’s tape.  As you can see I placed a trash bag right over the tank to protect it from paint.

Took 4 pieces of painter’s tape and attached it to each corner of the stencil and placed it on the wall.  I love having the level to guide me to a straight pattern.

It’s time to paint.  I rolled my foam roller into the paint and then rolled it onto a piece of paper towel. You will want to make sure there is little paint on the roller.

I rolled on the paint lightly to the area on the stencil.

I did the same thing with all the colors I applied to the wall.

To start the next section, I took the stencil and matched the bottom row of the stencil to the top row of the painted wall.

Did the same as I did with the first.  When I came to a corner I just matched patterns and let the stencil wrap to the corner without bending it.

I used the stencil brush for the hard to reach areas.  Tapping the brush into the paint on it’s side and not flat into the paint.  Tap off all the paint.  Dab onto the stencil.

When my stencil was getting thick of paint around the edges, I placed my stencil in warm water and wiped lightly.  Making sure the stencil is good and dry before starting again.

Just keeping up the steps.  It is starting to take shape.

Last step is to fix the boo-boos.  When stenciling you are not going to have perfectly straight lines.  You will have some bleeds.

What I did was take a fine bristle brush and traced around to clean up as much as I can.
