The first week was working on the mirrors and cabinets.  I am using the paint I had left over when I painted our Master Bedroom furniture.  The paint I am using is Benjamin Moore Advance, Edgecomb Gray.  I always keep primer on hand because I am always painting something.  I love using Zinsser Bulls Eye 123 Primer.

Here is how our bathroom mirrors and cabinets looked prior to week 1.

First thing I did was removed the mirrors from the wall and gave them a light sanding, I primed and painted the frames.

When painting my mirrors, I noticed the frame had space in each corner.  I took some wood filler and filled in the spaces, sanded and painted.  Much better !

I gave the frames 3 coats of paint, sanding in between each coat.  Below, I am removing the painters tape and cleaning the mirrors.

I am placing the mirrors in one of our Guest bedrooms until we can place them back up on the wall.

Now the mirrors are finished it is time to tackle the cabinets.  I removed all the drawers and doors from the cabinets.  Since it’s so hot out in the garage I decided to turn our kitchen into my work station.

I wiped down the cabinet with Simple Green before I started priming and painting.  I normally use TSP cleaner or mineral spirits, but I didn’t have any on hand.

I wanted to share how I paint cabinet doors.  Since it has groves and crevices a roller can not get into, I use a paint brush first.  Here are the steps I take.

  1. Paint all the crevices with a paint brush

2. Use a sponge roller to paint the rest of the door.

3.  Making sure there are no drips or puddles, I take my paint brush and sweep away.

4.  I give it one more swoop with my sponge roller and wipe off the edges.

The reason I like to wipe off the edges is to prevent more drips and drying of uneven paint.

Painting cabinets is not a hard job as I type this it isn’t a fun job either.  I would have to say it takes a lot of time and patience to do it right.  Do not rush the prep work, drying time or placing it back together.  Give each step the effort and time it needs.  All the time and effort will pay off in the end.

I also painted my little vanity chair and changed up the fabric.  To see the step by step tutorial you can check that out ⇒ VANITY STOOL UPDATE.

I had the paint left over from painting our front door so zero cost for that part.  I did buy the fabric which cost a total of $3.27.

As of today I still have one more coat to paint on the vanity cabinets and the front of the doors to do.  Once they are completed I can add the handles and place them back into the cabinets.

Here are my plans for the upcoming week.

  • Picking out a color to paint the walls
  • Deciding if I want to stencil the walls 🙂
  • Painting the walls
  • Detailing the patterned tile around the garden tub
  • Paint the grout lines of the existing tile to a more brighter color

So far on the budget.  The fabric was $3.27 !! Using what I have on hand helps with the budget.  I have plenty of room to continue onto next week with the budget!  Hope you keep coming back for the process of my project updating our Master bathroom.  I have been giving a little daily update on my stories as well if you want to keep up with my challenge.
