DIY MOSAIC CHRISTMAS TREE

Hey y’all!  As I promised another fun DIY to share with you.  This one was pretty special, I had my daughter’s help with this one.  ♥ 🙂 ♥

Like I told you yesterday on the tour of our Christmas Family room (Our Christmas Family Room Tour) that I got this idea from Rebecca Robeson @Robeson Designs.  She is my all time favorite Christmas Designer!  If you haven’t seen her Christmas videos, you need to go check out You-tube.  Awesome lady!

This project was a little unnerving since you had to break a mirror.  I thought about the “old wives tale“, if you break a mirror it will bring you seven years of bad luck.  Well…I made up this..if you break it on purpose it will bring seven years of GOOD luck! 🙂

Let’s get started!

The items you will need:

  • 1 mirror.  I purchased mine at Lowe’s  – here it is online {{Wall Mirror}}
  • a board – cut into the size you need.  I cut mine to fit on my mantel
  • power grab adhesive.  I purchase mine at Lowe’s – here it is online {{Power Grip}}
  • caulk gun
  • hammer
  • gloves
  • protective eye wear
  • chalk
  • ruler or tape measure
  • sanded grout
  • sponge
  • and lots of water

First thing you want to do is grab your board, chalk and tape measure.

Find the center of your board and draw a line down the center.

Once you made your line down the middle, start drawing your Christmas Tree.  I used chalk so I can erase easily.  Believe me I erased a lot.  I think this was the hardest part of the DIY.

I took my mirror and hammer and went outside to break the mirror.  I used a sheet to lay down first to catch all the shattered mirror.

It took several hits with the hammer to break the mirror.  Funny just one drop and it normally does it for me when I don’t want it to break.

I kept hitting it until I knew it had broken in several pieces.  Now gently and carefully break it off in pieces and off the mirror backing.

We started separating them.  Large pieces, medium pieces, long narrow pieces, small pieces.

After we divided the pieces we looked for the top and the trunk of my tree.  You will be surprised what pieces you find for those two starter pieces.  I didn’t even try to break it a certain way and still found the perfect pieces.  After those were placed we started finding the pieces to fill in the tree.

Staying within your lines finding the right pieces.  I did break some larger pieces because they were not the right size for my board.

It was like putting a puzzle together,  my daughter and I use to put puzzles together when we went to the beach on vacation, it was fun working with her on this Christmas tree project.

Once you have your pieces all on your board, it is time to glue them down.  I like using the Power Grab but you can use any adhesive you want.  I wouldn’t use hot glue.

We started gluing at the bottom and worked our way up the tree.  I applied a stream of glue on the back of the mirror.

We buttered the glue on the back of the mirror after we applied the adhesive with a plastic knife.  We did this so it wouldn’t seep out the side.  You want to make sure you try not to get the glue onto the mirror.

Place your glued piece back were it belongs and start on another piece making sure all is glued down.

As we glued down each piece I took an end of a paper clip and scraped the excess glue away.

After all your pieces are glued down and the glue was all scraped off around the edges I took a wet sponge and cleaned the mirror.  There were some glue that got on the mirror from our fingers.

This is what my Christmas tree looks like before the next step.  Pretty good don’t you think?

I am using some grout that we had left over from a backsplash project.   Here is the grout I am using {{Keracolor grout}}.  I followed the directions on the back of the bag.

Since I am grouting over a mirror I am using my hands and not any tools.  I just started spreading the grout until I covered the board and mirror evenly.

Once I had it all covered I let it sit for 15 LONG minutes. 🙂

Now the messy part.  Get you a bucket of water and your sponge and start cleaning off the mirror.  I used a lot of buckets of water.  I used a sponge at first then grabbed an old t-shirt.  You want to use clean water, so once your water gets messy change it out frequently.

After I got the bulk of the grout off the mirror I used a sponge and start cleaning the mirror.

I polished my mirror with a clean cloth and that’s it.  Here is what my Mosaic Christmas Tree turned out like.

I placed it over my Christmas Mantel.  If you missed my Christmas Family room tour you can go tour it here {{Our Christmas Family Room Tour}}.

I sure hope that you got inspired from this DIY.  Isn’t it just beautiful?  It isn’t perfect and when breaking the mirror it does make bulleye marks on some of the edges.  You could use any color of grout or you can paint it any color after the grout dries.  I used warm gray grout.
