Hey there! Welcome to Decorate and More with Tip! Here on my blog I share how you can decorate your home on a budget. I share budget friendly decorations by creating it from scratch, revamping, re-purposing or giving it a makeover with easy tutorials. I hope I inspire you to create something beautiful for your home. 🙂
Last month we had our first Creative Craft Blog Hop, it was such a huge hit we decided to make it a monthly hop. This month we have 15 bloggers sharing some awesome crafts with you. It’s going to be a fun full crafting morning so get ready to be inspired! The craft blog hop is hosted by Chloe, Celebrate and Decorate and Andrea, Design Morsel. At the bottom of my craft tutorial I will share each participant’s link.

For my craft I am using some left over plastic spoons, candle holder and a toy from the Dollar Tree. Can you believe we can make a home decor piece out of spoons and a toy? What would you say if I told you we are going to make an artichoke sculpture to style in our home? Yep…that’s what I am making and you can too with the tutorial I have below.
Here are the items I will be using for this craft:
- 125 plastic spoons – Dollar Tree carries 48 spoons in one package. – I am using spoons I had on hand, a couple colors. ha!
- 1 Dollar Tree nerf football rocket toy
- a Dollar Tree candle holder or any piece to use for a base
- scissors
- hacksaw or something to cut through the football
- hot glue and a glue gun
- E6000
- paint – color of your choice
- a lighter
∼ MAKING THE ARTICHOKE PETALS ∼
- Cut the spoon’s bowl off the handle. It best to cut the spoon with the handle to the right and the bowl to the left and keep the bowl in an upright position, for some reason this helps to prevent the bowl from cracking. I am righthanded so reverse this if you are a lefthanded person.
- Trim the spoon’s bowl to resemble a flower petal. We want each piece to be 1 inch wide. Do this to all of the spoons.
- I created the look of an artichoke leaf by using a lighter to curl the ends. ◊Be careful◊ I placed the lighter ONLY 6 seconds to the tip then pushed the tip back to make it curl.
- Each petal’s size should be 1 inch x 1 inch.
Here is a quick video tutorial on how I created the petal.
∼ MAKING THE ARTICHOKE BASE ∼
- Cut the football off the rocket. To cut my toy I am using my Dollar Tree hacksaw. Making sure it is cut evenly.
- The Dollar Tree glass candle holder would work perfect for the base.
- I have a couple of the Dollar Tree candle holders up in my closet, instead I am using an old votive holder.
- To keep the football securely on the holder I applied E6000 and hot glue around the opening. I placed the cut end of the football inside the opening.
∼ ATTACHING THE PETALS TO THE BASE ∼
- Take 3 petals and cut into smaller petals.
- To form the topper of the artichoke attach the 3 smaller pieces side by side together with hot glue. Making sure you apply the glue to the inner part of the petal to keep the glue hidden.
- Adding a drop of glue to the very top of the football. Apply the topper to the hot glue, hold until it sets.
- Apply hot glue to the bottom of each petal. Glue each petal around the topper.
- Start the next row by gluing the petals between the top two top petals. Keep gluing the petals the same way until you are at the last two bottom rows.
- The last two rows we will be cutting the petals shorter, also we will cut a small slit in the petal’s center. This will allow the petal to lay flat. Do one row.
- The very last row, cut the petals a little smaller and a slit in the center. Fill in the rest of the base with the smaller petals.
Here is what my artichoke looks like after I finished gluing all the spoons on. Overlook the color of my artichoke, like I said earlier I used spoons I had in our cabinet from past events. I am spray painting the entire thing so it doesn’t matter what color spoons we use. 🙂
- To finish up the piece I am spray painting with Krylon Gloss Ivy Green.
- I placed my piece in a box and gave it two good coats. One coat standing upright and the second coat upside down. I made sure I got every square inch of the piece.
I hope this craft doesn’t intimate you. Cutting the spoons wasn’t hard even cutting 125 of them. 🙂 It was fun putting it together and watching it develop into an artichoke. I made it super easy for you. I gave you the supply list, the number of spoons you need, shared how to cut the spoons, how to curl the ends, and how to glue them to form an artichoke. All you need to do is sit down and have fun!
The only thing easier for you is to purchase one already made. 🙁 They run anywhere from $10 – $50. Making your own would involve spending $5.00 for supplies and 1 to 2 hours of your time. What a huge savings and a conversational piece to style in your home.
I hope you enjoyed my DIY Artichoke Sculpture.
