If you’re wondering how to begin to decorate a space, pull up a chair and stay for a minute, because I’m going to share my own process that I’ve been using for several years.

It’s a simple process that I learned through lots of trial and error in decorating in my own home. Don’t be fooled, I still make wrong choices, which you have seen following my page.

Below, you will find all my tips and tricks, I hope you find them helpful!  Also, Tammy from Patina and Paint will be sharing tips on her process as well.  I will have her link at the end of my page.

Here’s how I pull together home decor pieces when I want to decorate a space in our home.

1. Start by measuring your space you are decorating.

I learned the hard way; every space is different.  It is easy to go to the store, pick up the items you love to add, come home and the items are too large or tall for the place you want to style it on.

It is best to measure the space before you head out to search for home decor.

For example, my shelf in the laundry room is narrow, knowing the measurements will help me determine what I can or can’t place on my shelf.

2.  Consider the surrounding style and color of the space.

Having color sample cards, wallpaper and material samples will help with the color choices you make. If you want to use a pop of color, will it go with the existing colors in the room and so on.

3. Finding your inspirational piece or your anchor piece.

This would be the decor piece, probably your largest piece, that gives you the color, theme and the idea of decor pieces you need to decorate with.

Once you’ve got an inspiration to work with the other pieces will fall into place much easier.

4.  Layering pieces to create a larger accent piece.

If you found the perfect inspirational piece, but it is too small for you space, try layering to create a larger look and feel.

Secondary items should not be as strong or noticeable as the anchor but should still add value to the display and connection with the other pieces. Your secondary piece will usually go to the left or right of the anchor.

5. Pulling accent pieces together from the inspirational piece.

Adding accessories to compliment the anchor piece by keeping the pieces neutral in color and pattern.  Also, layering items in front of each other is the way to capture a more casual look.

  • Vases are perfect accent pieces, they add charm, personality and elegancy to any space.

  • Stems and Greenery will add a pop of color, texture and visual interest to your room.

  • Balancing and Placement of your accent pieces.

First, think about the scale and proportion of the objects you include. It’s important to vary the heights and sizes of the items to create visual interest.

Pieces spaced evenly over the whole surface lose their connection to one another and may end up looking as if they are set up for a garage sale. Snuggle them up to one another and let some of them touch.

Keeping to these simple tips will help you build your space in the style that fits your personality.  Another simple tip, find a photo or two of a vignette you love and copy it with your favorite similar pieces.
