Let the fun begin!  Here is what you would need to make a monogram striped door mat like mine! 🙂

1. Coir door mat (mine is an 18″ x 30″ mat) – I purchased mine from Target – here is one on Amazon
2. Exterior paint – I purchased black Folkart outdoor acrylic craft paint from Walmart and will be using some exterior paint I have on hand.
3. Chalk paint brushes
4. 2 inch wide Painters tape
5. Black sharpie
6. Craft knife
7. Printed off design from the computer

For my friends that likes my DIY door mat I am going to share where you can buy one similar, actually it is the design that inspired me.  FRONTGAGE MONOGRAM DOOR MAT.  Did you by chance catch the price of their mat?  Yep…..I didn’t spend a fourth of that.

First thing you will want to do is find a font that you want to use for your monogram letter.  I used the font Georgia font size 200 .  I printed the letter and made a copy enlarging it to 150%.  The design for each side of the monogram I used one on the below photo.  Just click to save to your computer and then print two copies.

Taking my painter’s tape and covering most of the mat.

Using a tape measure finding the center of my mat.

Once I marked the center I took my silver tray (the shape was perfect), placing that in the center and tracing around the tray with a black sharpie.

Taking my craft knife and cutting on the lines.

Pulling gently to remove the outer part of the tape.

Smoothing out and making sure the tape is secure on the mat.

Taking my printed out monogram T, cutting it out and gluing it to the center of the tape.

Using the craft knife and cut around the T.

I cut my two pattern designs out and glued and cut them the same way as the T.

Since the designs are so close to the exposed mat I am adding more tape for protection.

I am using FolkArt Outdoor arcylic craft paint and my chalk paint brush and applying the paint to the cut out patterns.  Dabbing NOT brushing.

I did three coats of the black.

DON’T REMOVE THE TAPE! Just remove it from the little part on the ends.

Adding a border of black around the center.  I took a ruler and a black sharpie and made a line ¼ inch from the center taped pattern.

I taped out the line and painted it black.

Applying stripes to my mat.  I started with a piece of my tape smack dab in the center.  I found the center, folded a piece of tape in half, I placed the fold line right on the center mark.  That will be my first stripe.

I took two pieces of tape and placed it next to the center one to keep my spaces even.  Kept doing that until I got the stripes all taped.

I took the same blue exterior paint that I used on my planter TRASH TALK and painted the spaces.

I might be a little obsessed with this, but make sure you paint the sides also!  That just makes it look complete.

Removed all the tape and let dry.  Are you excited or nervous?  I always have mixed feelings when I come to this part.  I am excited to see, but nervous to see if the paint seeped under the tape.

Two more steps.  I want to make one more frame around.  Taking my ruler and measuring inside of the first frame 1 inch and making a mark.

I used the next line from the blue stripes.

Taped both lines and painted it black.

I am so happy how my door mat turned out AND…………

I love how it looks on our front porch!

It took some time taping this mat, but I save a huge chunk of change by doing this myself.
