Do you like to decorate your gardens? If you do, I have a little garden decoration for you today! This is such a cute addition to your garden or even indoors. This turtle made out of terracotta pots doesn’t take long to make and is super easy. Below is my tutorial on how I made one for our garden.
Here are the items you will need:
- 4 mini Dollar Tree terracotta pots
- 1 small terracotta saucer
- 1 small styrofoam ball. I used a Christmas ornament
- liquid nails or power grab
- two shades of green paint
- white and black paint
- something in a triangle shape for the tail. I used a piece of potpourri
I mustard up enough energy to go up into the attic and get a Christmas ornament for the turtle’s head. I found an old ornament that fell off of a wreath I had. I am removing the foil covering.
Finding something for the turtle’s tail was a little challenging. I looked through all of my crafting supplies, I had a box of potpourri. I looked through the pieces to see if there was a piece the shape I needed. I did find a couple pieces that would work perfectly for a tail.
Now that I have his head, tail and body it’s time to paint all the pieces. The first paint I am using is the darkest shade of my green paint. I painted two coats to each piece. The ornament took about 4 coats to fully cover.
Once all the pieces were dry I added several pentagon shapes to the bottom of the sauces. I made a template to make sure all my shapes were the same size. I left a little space between each shape. I made sure to do the sides as well.
Using the lighter color of green I outlined the shapes.
To fill in the pentagon shape I used a stiff brush and tapped on the paint. I did a light coverage, I didn’t want the shapes filled in completely.
Taking some liquid nails adding it to the bottom of the mini terracotta pots.
Sit the 4 mini pots close together and place the saucer on top of all 4. I added weight to the top to help secure the saucer to the pots.
Taking the painted ornament I painted a face on it with white and black paint.
Adding a dot of liquid nails to the saucer where you want to place his head. I propped his head up until the liquid nails had time to set.
I added liquid nails to the end of the potpourri piece adding it under the saucer where I wanted to place his tail. I used a clip to keep it secure until the glue dried.
I let it sit 12 hours.
I sealed him with two coats of spray sealer.
So….I forgot that spray sealer will eat styafoam. So next time I will use a brush sealer. 🙁
Anywhere you place him he steals the show. Doesn’t he look so darn cute?
You can make the turtle any size. My baby turtle cost less than $5. I purchased 2 packages of the Dollar Tree mini pots, (package comes with 3 pots). I have 2 mini pots for another project. I had the ornament on hand and the piece of potpourri. It is such a cute craft to make with the kiddos too.
