Hey y’all!

If you are following me on Facebook or Instagram, you know I have been working to update my daughter’s townhouse.  We just moved her in and now the fun begins.  I am happy to report that one room is finished.   A lot of measuring later, it is now complete.  I measured, taped and painted the lattice technique on one wall in her master bedroom.  I love how this turned out and more importantly she loves it! 🙂

I thought I would share with you how I painted the lattice pattern on the wall.

Here is her room before.  The previous owner must of loved Antique white.  The whole house from crown molding to baseboards are painted antique white.

Let’s get started!

I first measured to find the center of the wall.  I wanted a diamond smack dab in the middle.  My thought is to have the pattern centered.  More pleasing to the eye.

I measured the height and the width of the wall and marked the center.

Using my ruler with a level built in, I measured 12 inches from my center mark, marking every 12 inches all the way across the wall.  * Making sure I stay level while marking my 12 inches.

TIP:  Your diamond should be half the size in width as it is in height.  My diamond’s height is 24″ and 12″ in width.

Second row I measured from the middle mark 6 inches.

From the 6 inch mark I measured UP 12 inches and repeated across the wall marking 12 inches the same way as the first row.

Once I had the whole wall marked, I wanted to make sure my diamonds were even so I connected the dots diagonally to check the pattern.

*You don’t have to do this step you could just connect the dots with your painters tape.  I just wanted to make sure that the diamonds were even and straight.  Again…my OCD kicks in.

Now that I knew my diamonds were good to go, I painted the part where the two lines connected.  If not the lines would be very noticeable.  I just used a small roller and painted over the X.

I started taping the pencil marks making sure that I tape next to the lines and not over the lines.

Making sure not to cover the pencil line.  I went right next to it so that I can paint over the pencil lines.

After I taped off the first diagonal lines I started to tape the other diagonal lines.  You want to make sure you tape the same way on the lines so your diamond will be equally shaped.

I kept my lines to the right of the tape.

Taping was the fun part because you can really tell the design.

I like to paint the taped part with the base color.  This step helps to seal the tape edge so the top paint color won’t bleed under the painters tape.

Just one coat of the base color is all it needs, I just painted over the tape and not the entire wall.

Now it is time to paint my wall, cutting it in as normal.  I am painting the entire room so I am not being neat in the corners.  If you are just painting the focal wall you might want to tape off the other walls connected to the focal wall to prevent getting paint on the other walls.

I did two coats of the top color.  If painting the whole room you will want to paint the focal wall first.  You need to remove the tape before the second coat dries.

Before it dried I pulled off the tape.

To make it easier remove the tape you applied to the wall last.  This tape will be the top tape.

Doesn’t it look good?

The paint color is Sherwood Williams; Perfect Greige. (SW 6073) in egg shell.

The clock was made by my daughter and husband from an old fence section.  She purchased the clock part from Hobby Lobby.  My husband cut a circle out of the fence section.  She white washed the wood and painted the numbers on with a stencil.

I managed to get this wall done and the room painted in one day.  It was very easy to do after I figured out where the center of the wall was and how large I want the diamonds.  I hope I inspired you to paint a focal wall in your home.
