For my craft today I am taking some Dollar Tree household items to make a cute Fall pillow cover.  I went over to the bath section and cleaning section to find the main items for the pillow cover.  Let’s get started making a cute textured pillow for your Fall home this season!

Here’s what you need to make your own pillow cover:

  • Pumpkin template (I provided below)
  • 3 Dollar Tree bath mats
  • 2 Dollar Tree dust mop pad
  • a piece of burlap
  • Surebonder glue and glue gun
  • Sewing machine (you could use the Surebonder glue as well
  • Pieces of Dollar Tree Nautical rope
  • 2 Dollar Tree burlap leaves
  • Some Dollar Tree twine

Sizing the Material for the Main Part of the Pillow

Laying one full bath mat down flat on  your table.  Placing the second mat on top folding it ¹⁄³ into the center.

Laying the third mat on top of the two mats, folding that one ¼ in to the center.

I trimmed the two folds up to reduce the bulk.  After cutting the two piece I zigzag stitched the cut ends.  I then folded the two cut end 1 inch down stitching the fold line in place.  Place the mats to the side for now.

Cutting Out the Pumpkin Pattern

I am sharing the pumpkin template with you that I used.  For your pillow cover resize the pattern to fit.  I cut the template out in 4 sections.  1-2-3 and stem.

Using pattern #1; place it on the back of the dust mop pad and cut out.

I did the same with pattern #2 and #3 of the pumpkin pattern.

Taking a piece of burlap ribbon tracing out the stem and cutting it out.

Attaching the Pumpkin to the Bath Mat

Taking the full bath mat and your pillow form to find the center.

Place the center of the pumpkin on the mat pinning in place.  I am going to sew it on my mat but you can glue it with fabric glue.  Make sure to lift up the fur and stitch on the lining.

Did the same with the two sides of the pumpkin.

Attaching the stem with a basic stitch or glue.

Creating the Pillow Cover

Lay the pumpkin cover face up on a flat surface.  Lay one of the cut mat face down, (trim edge in the center) on top of the pumpkin cover.  Pin the upper edge only.

Lay the other cut mat on on top making sure the trim part is in the center.  Pin all around the mats.

Stitch around the edges.  I had to change to a heavy duty needle to get through the mats.  You should have a little pocket in your pillow cover.

Turn the pillow inside out.  Making sure to press out the corners.

Detailing the pumpkin with twine and Surebonder glue.

To add rims to the pumpkin I braided three piece of twine and glued it where I wanted the rims to be.

I unraveled a piece of nautical rope giving me three pieces, using a single piece to outline the pumpkin and stem.

I also made vines with a single piece of the rope using Surebonder glue to attach it to the pillow.

Added two pieces of burlap leaves to the stem, as well.

I know the tutorial reads a little long but as you are making the pillow cover it doesn’t seem long at all, actually it’s fun. You can make your own fun design.

Can you believe this cost under $6 bucks?  It was made out of all Dollar Tree items.  Never thought about it when I was making it, wouldn’t it be so cute with little corner pompoms?  Oh yes it would!
