DIY Patriotic Gnome Tutorial

Gnome craft supplies

The items you will need:

• mason jar
• tube sock
• twine
• scissors
• mop head (Dollar Tree)
• small wooden stars (two)
• stock paper (pattern of your choice)
• mod podge
• large wooden bead
• hot glue and glue sticks
• red electrical wire
• 3 jewel beads (white, red and blue)
• gold foil ribbon
• patriotic ribbon
• nautical rope
• Dollar Tree patriotic plastic hat

First step:  The body of the Gnome.

Place the jar in the sock.  Pull tight at the top.

Tie with twine to close the sock at the lip of the jar.  Cut off the excess.

Second Step:  Beard of the Gnome.

Pull 7 strips of the mop head out of the holder.  Cut them 12 inches each.

Using one of the cut off pieces for the base, slip each of the seven 12-inch pieces onto the short piece.

1. Fold the strip in half
2. Lay the folded strip on the short piece with the middle loop to one side and the end pieces to the other.
3. Thread the end pieces through the loop and pull tight.  Creating a knot.

This is how it should look when all 7 are knotted on the short piece.

To make the beard fuller, untwist each of the 14 strands.

Glue the beard below the neck of the jar.

Trim the end of the beard evenly.

Step three:  Add the hat.

Apply a stream of hot glue to the inside of the hat and place on the top of the jar.

Step four:  Eyes for the gnome.

Using 2 small wooden star cutouts for the eyes.  Putting your spin on this part with paint or a pretty patriotic paper.

Steps I did for my gnome’s eyes.

1. Trace out the stars on the paper.
2. Cut out the stars.
3. Glue the paper onto the wooden cutout star.
4. Apply one coat of glue to the top for a sealer.

Hot glue the stars under the hat for the eyes.

Step five:  Create a nose and mustache.

Use a large wooden bead for the nose.  Thread one of the short left-over pieces from the beard through the bead.  Unravel the pieces, cut ends to make the length you want.

Glue the bead just below the stars in the center.

Step six:  Create two arms.

Making two arms out of the band of the sock and rope.

1. Cut the band from the left-over sock.
2. Cut the band in two small pieces.
3. Cut two pieces of rope to the size of the band piece.
4. Wrap the rope into the band using hot glue.
5.  Attach each arm to the sides of the body.

Step eight:  Embellishing your gnome.

Adding some cute decorations.

1. Cut a piece of red electrical wire the length from arm to arm.
2. Glue the wire to each end of the arm.
3. Pick out three beads, red, blue and white (I painted a yellow bead white).
4. Cutting three small pieces of gold metallic ribbon making a fringe edge.
5. Tuck the ribbon into the hole of the bead, leaving the fringe part out.
6. Hot glue the red, white and blue bead on to the wire.
7. Attach small pieces of ribbon to the end of the arms where the ends of the wire are glued.

Last step:  Making the feet.

To finish the gnome, take a wooden cut out heart paint it black, glue it to the bottom of the gnome with the point of the heart facing to the back.

That’s it, I know it seems like a lot of steps here on the blog, but once you start creating your gnome project it goes fast.
