DIY CHALLENGE | JULY 4th FRAMES

Besides Christmas, the patriotic holidays are another fun way to bring out the red decorations.

Since July 4th is a little more than a month away, I decided to have a patriotic themed DIY for the challenge this month.  I will have all the DIYer’s blog posts linked at the bottom of my page.

It’s the first Wednesday of the month, which means it’s time for the monthly DIY Challenge.  If you are jumping over from Michelle, Blessings by Me what did you think of Michelle’s wreath?  It is so adorable and I love the tutorial Michelle provided for us.

I had so many ideas running through my head on this theme, it was hard to pick one.  I have shared so many previous Red, White and Blue crafts it was hard to remember what I already shared. 🙂

For my DIY patriotic project, I am taking two frames making July 4th themed frames out of them.

Supplies I am using:

  • two shadow box frames
  • wooden star and 2 wooden shims
  • red, white and blue craft paint
  • 2 pieces of cardstock
  • ribbon
  • wallpaper paste or mod podge
  • sandpaper
  • hot glue and wood glue
  • staple gun

STEP BY STEP DIRECTIONS

  • Remove the back of the frame

  • Gently remove the flower from the back of the frame.
  • I am using wallpaper paste, but mod podge will work too.  Sizing the cardstock to fit the frame’s back.  Adding paste to the back of the board and apply the paper.

  • Painting the frame, my frame took 3 coats.

  • I am using shims,  cut into three sizes, one at 5½” and two at 4½”.  Other options are craft sticks, popsicle sticks or paint stir sticks.

  • Paint the front and all 4 sides red, I am using Apple Barrel paint in the color Cardinal Red.
  • Creating the number 4 with the three pieces.  Using wood glue and hot glue to attach them together.

To create the number 4

  1. To find the center of your board, form the number 4 out of your pieces onto your board and mark.
  2. Hot glue the back of the 5½” piece and attach it to the board.
  3. Add a dab of wood glue and hot glue to the top of the 5½” piece.
  4. Place one of the other pieces to the long piece in a diagonal position.
  5. Add the glue to the endo of the short piece and the center of the long piece.
  6. Add the last piece to complete the number 4.
  • I used a pencil to write letters spelling JULY.  I painted the letters blue and white with Apple Barrel, Admiral blue and white.

  • To dress up the number I added a messy bow.

  • I used 120 grit sandpaper to distress the edges of the frame.
  • Place the back on the frame.  I used my staple gun to secure the back.

That’s it.  You can do any type of decorations inside the shadow box.  Very easy to create your own custom framed art.

I shared the video tutorial on the star shadow box on my Decorate and More with Tip Blog Facebook page.  You can view here → July 4th Frame.
