REPURPOSED HEADBOARD CHRISTMAS SIGN

Hey there welcome to Decorate and More with Tip,  I am joining 5 other friends to share our thrift store finds or repurposing something we have sitting around our home today.  I will share all of my friend’s blog links at the bottom of my page.  A big thanks to Emily with LeCultivateur and Tara with Stilettos and Shiplap for hosting this fun challenge each month.

The item I worked on was our daughter’s first bed’s headboard, it’s been up in our attic for over 23 years.  It’s solid wood and is in good shape other than being dusty.  I am going to repurpose this to make a Christmas sign for our home.

Before I started working on the headboard I made sure our daughter didn’t want it for their daughter.  She said no go ahead and cut away. ha!  There are so many options you can do with a solid wood headboard.  It’s a twin size headboard which is the perfect size for our entryway.  I brought out the circular saw and cut the frame from the middle piece.

Removing it off the frame was pretty simple, just two straight cuts down each side.  I will save the frame for another project.

I took the electric sander and gave it a quick sanding with 100 grit sandpaper.

Wiped all the dust off with a damp cloth before staining the piece.  Keeping it the same stain color as the bench in the entryway I am using Minwax Hickory stain.  Applying it with a chip brush and wiping off the excess with a clean cloth.  I only stained one coat to the piece.

I let the piece dry for 24 hours.  In the meantime I found a saying to place on the headboard.  Here’s the Merry Christmas inspiration sign I found on Google search.

I printed off the wording and I enlarged the font to the size 370.  I divided it into several sections when printing it out, when I had all the wording printed out I taped the wording together to create the pattern.

To create the pattern onto the board I centered the pattern on the board, pressing down with an ink pen I traced the pattern.  This carved a small detail onto the board.

I used Waverly chalk paint in Plaster and painted all of the letters.

Gave all the letters 2 coats of paint.

After the paint dried I took 150 grit sandpaper and gave the entire piece a light sanding creating a distress look to the lettering.

Taking a damp cloth removing off all the dust.

This is how my piece looks so far.

I applied Minwax finishing wax to the entire piece.

I measured and double checked the pattern to make sure it would centered from side to side…..BUT, why is there always a but?  I measured the top to the curve cut out but I didn’t think about the bottom, since the C curves more to the center and the S swirl goes out to the side it doesn’t look centered.  To fix that I am placing a couple Dollar Tree snowflake cut outs to each bottom side of my wording.

I didn’t want to over power the sign with the snowflakes so I grabbed 4 from the pack and made 3 different sizes by cutting some of the stems off.

Painted my snowflakes with Waverly chalk paint in the color plaster to match the lettering, dry brushed some dark brown on them and applied some Minwax finishing wax. Let them dry before applying them to the sign.

Once the snowflakes were dry I applied wood glue to the back of each snowflake and attached them to my sign.  I added 3 to one side and a single snowflake on to the other.

It looks more to the centered now even though the wording isn’t.

I will place this in our home when I start decorating our home for Christmas, for now I am sharing what it looks like on my craft room’s floor.  🙂

It’s time to check out your local thrift stores, Goodwill, yard sales or Facebook market place if you don’t have any good items stored away somewhere.

A headboard made a perfect Christmas sign or if you don’t want it to say Merry Christmas find a cute Welcome wording and paint it on your board.  Can’t beat decorating on the cheap!!!
