Hello friends!  Happy Friday to you.  How was everyone’s week?  I am all geared up for a full decorating weekend.  I am usually farther along in the house decorating than I am this year.  It is getting done room by room.  I am so excited to be able to show you my home all decorated for Christmas.

Today I am sharing a little DIY on how to make a beautiful Poinsettia bow.  A couple of years ago I stumbled onto a tutorial and have been making them ever since.   I have used this bow for a tree topper (which you will see below) and Christmas packages.

You will need:

• wire ribbon
• scissors
• floral wire
• wire cutters

TIP:  I always use wire ribbon when making any type of bow.  It forms a better and fuller bow.

Cut different lengths (doesn’t matter the measurements) – Long – medium – short – no shorter than 6″.  For the bow I made, I used 30 cut strips.  You can use many colorful ribbons as you like.  I am using coordinating ribbon for my bow.

Tip: Use more strips if you want a fuller bow – for a larger bow cut longer strips.  Rememeber for a larger bow you want to cut more strips to make it fuller also.

Here we go:

Cut 30 strips.  All different sizes.  I didn’t use a certain number just started cutting.

After you cut all your strips you will need to fish tail the ends.

Here is how you fish tail the ends of your ribbon.

Fold your strip in half – length wise.

Cut the ribbon  at an angle (making sure both wire edges are at the bottom and the fold at the top). 

*TIP:  Make sure that the fold part is the inner cut.  Position your scissors with the tips of your scissors pointing inward toward the fold edge.

Should look like this

Starting with your longer pieces first, start stacking your ribbon in a pile.

Longer on bottom ending with the shorter on top.

Take your floral wire and cut a long piece to wrap the center of the ribbon.

Fold and pleat all your strips in the center.

Wrap the wire around the center and secure it tightly.

Should look like this

Lay your wired strips flat

Start with the first strip, pull each end to the opposite sides.  For example:  Pull the top part of the strip to the left while pulling the bottom part of the strip to the right. Alternate each strip so they are going the opposite direction as the one before it.

• When I was making my bow my photographer (husband) was not available to take the photos of me doing the next two steps.  I tried to take photos of the pulling process by myself, but I couldn’t show you the true technique.  So when he was available to take the photos I had to use pieces of scrap ribbon to show you.  I wanted you to see the technique.

Keep doing that to all of the strips.

Once all the strips are pull out, start to shape your bow to the way you want it.

This is how mine turned out.

I am using the bow for one of my guest bedroom’s tree topper.

The colors in this room are burgundy, butterscotch (as I call the color) and gold.  On this tree I put these beautiful poinsettia picks.  I purchased them several years ago at Dillard’s.   I just love them.

My tree:

I wrapped the ribbon around the tree and tucked it in and out every so often.  I placed the DIY bow  to one side and placed 4 red berry picks to the top.  On the other side of the bow I placed two gold glittered reindeer.

I love the look of this bow on my tree.  What do you think?
