HOW TO BALANCE AN OFF-SET FOCAL POINT

Hey everyone!  Today is the last day of July can you believe it?

Bare with me on the photos friends!  I had to do with what I had.  My camera was left at home and the lighting was not my friend. 🙁

Today I want to share with you a challenge that we all have had in our home at one point or another.  It could be a window, fireplace or in my son’s case a TV.  When you have a certain area in your home that is off-center, the entire room can feel awkward. In a perfect world we could just move it.  In my son’s situation moving the TV wouldn’t be an option because it is mounted on the wall.

The below picture should be one of those pictures you see in a magazine with a title above it.  WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?

The TV is not centered and the console is too small for the TV.

First thing we need to do is get a larger piece of furniture to fit properly under the massive TV.  Men and there televisions!

We found the right piece at a furniture store that was going out of business.  And I might add it’s solid wood and after doing a price war with the store clerk…..BINGO!  We stole the piece!  HERE is a white sideboard that they had also in case you are interested.

To balance out the wall, I decided to use two floating shelves.  Adding the shelves to the side of the TV creates a symmetrically look.

We purchased the shelving at Lowe’s.  HERE are the ones we purchased.

Figuring out the size of shelving took some math, which I am so happy my son is a math major.  To achieve this I wanted the same distance from the doorway to the TV as the shelves to the corner of the wall.  Keeping in mind that I wanted the shelves to be centered with the TV and corner.  WHEW!  Our figures came out that we needed a 24″ shelf.

With a little more space above the console than I wanted I added an arrow  to the wall to help fill in the space.

I balanced out the floor space by adding his shelving tower under the shelves.

He gave me strict orders not to make it girly.  I added some simple decor pieces and we rearranged his furniture.

Here is his space before.

After our changes

The little wooden basket we found at a thrift store for $1.41. (odd price isn’t it)? Great little remote holder, don’t you think?  The jack we found at Marshall’s.  HERE is one on Amazon.com

Found the lantern at Kirkland’s.  HERE is the lantern.  He didn’t want a candle so we found the colorful orbs at Walmart.  HERE are the orbs found on Amazon.

He purchased the T and coach sign at Hobby Lobby.  HERE is the letter and HERE is the sign.

Remember what the TV wall looked like before?

Huge difference isn’t it?
