CHALK PAINTED CANDLESTICK

Hello friends!  Happy Tuesday! ♥

While I am waiting for this pollen to settle so we can get to our back porch project and get that finished I have been working around the house doing a few decor changes.  Mostly because I am bored and want to be busy doing something!  The first little change was the faux shiplap over our fireplace mantel.  I am so happy that I decided to take the risk and paint that.  If you missed my blog you can click HERE to see how I created the shiplap wall.

I am going to do a budget friendly makeover in our foyer.  I will be shopping my home, do some revamping, some DIYs and maybe purchase a few little things to make this an inexpensive room makeover.

Today, I am going to work on a candlestick that I bought for the foyer table from Ross a while back.  I like the shape and the size of the candlestick.  It went well with the table decor in the room.  The way the candlestick looks now will not work with what I have in mind.

Here is the candlestick that I am going to paint to make it look like a wooden farmhouse style candlestick.

Instead of storing it with all the other home decor that I am not using I am going to use some chalk paint and revamp it.   I have heard you can use chalk paint on about any type of surface.  This candlestick is a glass/metal type material I thought what the heck…right?  I do have to say the more I use chalk paint the more I like using it.

I will be using the below paint:

Let’s get started!

I used a clean cloth to remove any dust that might be on the candlestick.  (The red tablecloth is making the candlestick look pinkish instead of gold).

I painted two coats with the cashew chalk paint.  (photo below is with just the first coat)

Once the second coat was dried I applied Martha Living metallic paint in the color bronze with a clean cloth.

  • I take the clean cloth and apply some paint on the cloth and wipe it onto the candlestick.
  • let it sit for a few minutes
  • buffing off with a cloth.

After the bronze metallic paint dried I wanted a little more detail, I took the cashew paint back out and dry brushed a few brush marks on the candlestick.

I did a light sweeping motion with the chalk paint brush to some areas. On other areas I dabbed the candlestick with the brush.

After I had it the way I wanted I took out the Martha Living metallic silver paint and applied that with a soft cloth all over the candle stick the same way as the bronze paint.  This just gave it a little sheen and a more rustic barn wood look.

I finished the candlestick with a coat of Minwax paste finishing wax to seal the paint.

  • Apply a thin, even coat of Minwax Paste Finishing Wax with a clean cloth. A thin even coat
  • Allow to dry 10-15 minute
  • Polish with a clean cloth

That’s it.  This technique gave the candlestick a way different look.  I wanted a more wooden look to the candlestick, I think I accomplished it.  Since it was a gold base color I didn’t want to distress it, I knew if I try sanding the gold finish would show through and that’s not what I wanted.  I used the dry brushing technique and metallic paint to give it the texture without distressing.

This DIY didn’t cost me anything to do.  I had the paint on hand.  In fact, it saved me money, I would of had to go out and buy a piece for my foyer table since I am changing decor styles.  I am thrilled that it turned out the way it did.  Never be afraid of trying something with paint.  It is just paint!
