Hey everyone!
It’s time for another DIY Dollar Tree project! You know how much I love DIYs and the Dollar Tree. I was looking for inspiration for the back porch and saw a tutorial on a tray made out of game pieces at the Dollar Tree.
I love using trays around my home and I have several of them. I am thinking I want a tray on my coffee table bench for the back porch. Less than $4.00 I can use this on the back porch and not worry about it being damaged from the moisture or the heat.
Here is the items I used to make this tray.
- 3 packs of the Tumbling Tower game (I only used 74 blocks (2 boxes and 2 blocks from the third box) for the tray and 6 for handle support until it dried)
- a 11×14 picture frame
- E6000 glue
- scrap paper with a design (I used wrapping paper)
Let’s get started!
I unwrapped the picture frame and place the decorated paper in the frame.
I took the game pieces out of the box and package.
Taking a piece of the game I apply E6000 to one of the longest sides of the block and attached it to the glass butting it up to the frame.
I kept gluing the blocks to the frame. I had to keep moving the blocks in order to fit them nicely on the frame. I switched the color each time.
After I was done with the first layer I started on the second layer applying the pieces the same way as the first besides the shorter sides. I will be doing something a little different for those on the second layer.
When I got to the shorter side of the tray I skipped two of the blocks. I wanted to make an opening for a handle. So I placed a game piece there just to remind me not to glue those two pieces.
I kept gluing the blocks to form the second layer.
After the second layer was glued down I started on the third and final layer. When I got to the place where the opening will be I took a game piece and I applied glue to the shorter sides to secure the blocks to the side of the next piece.
I used three blocks to keep the third layer from drooping at the handles.
After I finished with the third layer I let it sit for 24 hours.
Once it is completely dry I remove the three support pieces.
You could leave this like it is or you can paint it. I thought I wanted to leave it the way it was, but I just didn’t think this is the look I was after. I decided to paint the tray.
I found some paint at Lowe’s on the OOPS shelf for $3.00. That was less expensive than spray paint which is why I was in Lowe’s in the first place. So I snatched the OOPS paint up.
I primed the game pieces first and then started painting. I dry brushed the paint on the tray.
It is not very sturdy to use as a tray with heavy items on it. For what I will be using it for will work perfectly. It is going to be for display only.
What do you think? I had a great time gluing and stacking the game pieces to create this tray.
Thanks for stopping by while I made my little Dollar Tree tray.
