The most asked question I hear when sharing the color palette in our home, is how I create a color palette?

To be honest, I changed our home’s color so many times, it’s crazy.  Decorating our home with trendy colors and styles has cost me way too much than I would like to admit.  I learned the hard way; trends come and go but decorating with your favorite color stays with you for a long time.

When decorating I like to use a color palette, it gives every makeover an easy approach to achieve a cohesive look and feel in our home.  So, how can we create a color palette to make decorating easier?  Keep on reading.

Tips on Building a Color Palette

Tip One ~

Inspiration – find a style you gravitate toward; you probably have it in your home already. It’s easier to choose a suitable color palette when you know the style.

Tip Two ~

Main Colors – with every color palette you typically start with your base or primary color – the color you’ll use the most.  Along the primary color you will need to select a secondary color and lastly colors with different hues of the primary and secondary colors.

Whole Home Color Scheme

Colors with different hues, these are a mixture of the primary or secondary color with white, grey or black mix in to create different tints, tones and shades.

Tint – adding white to the primary color will create light paint colors, they are a true way to make a room feel larger and brighter.  Also adds value and depth to a space.

Tone – adding grey to the primary color this creates saturated paint colors adds richness and vibrancy to a space.

Shade – adding black to the primary color, decorating with darker paint colors will elevate the space and provides a bold statement to the space.

Note to self:  Paint colors won’t necessarily look the same in your home as they do in the photographs. Lighting plays a huge role in how the color looks in your home.

Recap of how I create my color palette:

  •  Chose my main color.  Adirondack blue by Behr

  • Secondary color.  Sturdy Brown by Behr

  • Select lighter tint of both the main and secondary colors.  Platinum by Behr and Even Better Beige by Behr.

  • Selecting saturated colors.  Tin Foil by Behr and Basketry by Behr.

  • Bring in a darker shade of my primary color.  Midnight blue by Behr.

When placing the sample swatches together I have created a color palette to take with me when selecting home decor.
