DECORATING AN ENTRYWAY DRESSER

When it came to finding the right piece for the back wall in the family room, I knew it had to be a substantial size.  With the size of the space a normal size entryway table would be too small for the room.   When walking into the furniture store, I strolled to look at all their entryway tables, nothing fit the size I was searching for.  As y’all know me, I looked at the section where they kept the marked down furniture.  Even though it is a Dresser, it was the perfect piece for the space, and it had storage.  A WIN-WIN!

Since I purchased the dresser, I have painted it with Retique It Liquid Wood and on top of it I placed my Arch Wall Mirror I painted black from Kirkland’s.

When designing your dresser, you want to create a stylish and welcoming decorated space that reflects your style. Whether you have a small dresser or a larger one like I do, there are plenty of creative ideas to help you elevate it.

Let’s dive right into my tips on decorate a dresser in the family room.

Decorating A Dresser in a Family Room

First Tip: Size, style and function

Before you start shopping for furniture to decorate, consider the size, style and function of the piece.  A piece should be proportionate to the size of the room, match your desired aesthetic and to serve a purpose.

Second Tip: Bring in height

Bringing height to the dresser creates visual interest, balance and a more tailored look.  It helps to draw the eye and make the display feel less flat.

Taller items like mirrors, lamps or even artwork creates a focal point and draws the eye in.  Mixing the heights makes each item stand out on the dresser.

Third Tip:  Mix textures and finishes

Just as important as bringing in height, so is mixing textures and finishes to your dresser or really any space.  It adds depth, interest and visual appeal.  By using different materials, you can create a more layered and lived-in feel.

Contrasting textures like a wood riser with a metal candle sniffer and a texture potted plant adds character to a space, making it feel more unique and less generic.

And don’t be shy showcasing your sweet family in frames.  When displaying your family’s photos choose frames that complements your decor and the photos themselves.  Considering materials, shapes and color when selecting frames to display.

Last Tip:  Group items in odd numbers

It is a known fact we all heard in our decorating life, “rule of odds”.  Arranging your objects in odd numbers is more visually appealing.  Actually, the reason decorating in odds gives us a sense of balance because there is a central focal point.  However, that doesn’t mean you have to always decorate in odd numbers to make it look appealing.

If you look at this side of my dresser, I leaned a book against the vase.  This not only creates color, but it gives a visual interest to the space.

Adding the wooden riser adds texture but also corrals all the items to give it a more organized look.  So, would you count each item on the riser, or do you see the riser and decor as one? Hmm, that’s a good question.  You can use even number decor pieces and still get the appealing feel.  It’s only a basic rule to help you achieve a balanced look.

I am very happy with how the back wall looks in our family room.

To recap on using my tips to style my dresser:

  1. I took in consideration of size, style and function for the dresser.
  2. Used different heights with my decor.
  3. Mixing textures and finishes.
  4. Grouping my items for a more appealing look and feel.
