Decorative plates are so expensive, I can’t see paying the price, so what did I do? I made my own, no one would know the difference until they are up close to them.
Todays tutorial, I am going to show you how you can make your own decorative plate for less than $2.00. How fun is this???

The supplies you will need are listed below:
- glass clear plate – I purchased my plates at the Dollar Tree
- material – I purchased my material at Hobby Lobby
- Mod Podge
- foam brush
- scissors
- alcohol and a paper towel
How to make your own decorative plate
Start off with a clean plate. Wipe all the smudges and dust with a paper towel and alcohol.
Cut your material to cover the entire back side of your plate.
Apply a good amount of Mod podge to the back of the plate. Using a generous amount, spread the Mod podge evenly on the entire back side making sure to get the edges. I found it sticks better when you apply more on the plate.
Center the material, (pattern side down), onto the glued plate. Pressing the material firmly on to the plate. Keep rubbing until the material is securely attached.
Let dry for several hours, turn the plate over and trim off the excess material. I tilt my scissors to get a close cut.
Apply another coat of Mod podge to the top of the fabric.
Let dry for several hours.
Finally, when the Mod Podge is dry, your plates are done! I did not use dishwasher safe Mod Podge because I am using mine for decorative purposes only.

Love how versatile these decorative plates are. Would be fun to make a set of different patterns but have them all tied together somehow. I am in need of some dinner sized plates so may be trying this soon. Another great tutorial!!
I think so too Kelli. I will be making some bolder prints for Christmas. I love the look of these and the price! Thanks Kelli!
Very pretty Terrie! They look so professional. Don’t think you could buy prettier or better made decorative plates!
I wanted just a gingham print for my hutch this Fall but for Christmas I might try a bolder pattern. I love this idea!!
Thank you! Can’t wait to make some! Question – Is Dishwasher safe mod-podge really available? Not that I would put them in the dishwasher, but a gentle handwashing. Great for holiday/seasonal salad plates to go with my white dinner plates. I am really getting into tablescapes and dinners since I’ve retired.
PS love your site!
Kimberly I saw some at Hobby Lobby, pretty pricy. You might want to check Amazon or other craft stores to see their prices. I will be changing mine often so I used regular Mod podge so I can wash it off easy. If I use mine for cookies or other things I would just wipe the front part off where the food was. It should be fine.
Fantastic project. These look so pretty . Pinned!
Thank you Cindy. Hope you are feeling better.
Very cute Terrie!
I love it! I’m not a crafter, but I might can manage this!
Super cute! I’ve seen some adorable decorative plates but like you can’t stomach the price. I might give this a try! Nice job, Terrie!
