Hey there! I am taking you back into my daughter’s master bathroom for another update. I shared with you what we had done so far last Friday. If you missed that post you can catch up with us ⇒ A Bathroom Makeover.
Today I am going to share with you how we turned her marble vanity counter top to an inexpensive concrete overlay.
Here is what the counter top looked like before we started.
The counter tops are cultured marble with integral sinks….not her favorite. It was not in the budget to replace the vanity top so we gave her counter top a makeover with a concrete overlay. What can it hurt? It wasn’t in great shape we took the risk to attempt the overlay technique. We are so happy we took the risk, it looks great! 🙂

Here are the items we used for this project:
- TEC Universal Skimcoat and Patch
- Taping Knife
- bucket
- gloves
- putty knife
- sponge
- Professional Choice Matte Finish Sealer
- Miracle Sealants Miracle Applicator
- electric sander
- 50 – 100 – 220 grit sand paper
- concrete stain (the same stain I used for my screened in porch floor. You can view that tutorial HOW I TURNED MY PORCH CONCRETE TO LOOK LIKE A WOOD FLOOR)
- clean cloths
We removed all the faucets and drains. Sanded the counter top with 50 grit sand paper, vacuumed all the dust and cleaned the area with a clean damp cloth.
We mixed the skimcoat as directed.
We mixed it up like pancake batter trying to get all the lumps out.
My daughter poured it on the counter top while I spread onto the counter top, the lumps I smashed down and made it smooth with my trowel.
I start smoothing it over the counter top with the trowel in a thin layer.
When I got to the sink I couldn’t use the trowel so I used a vinyl place matt we purchased at the Dollar Tree to use as a trowel. Using my hands to form a layer in the bowl first.
Doing the edges we made the skimcoat thicker and we applied to the edge by hand.
We let that dry for 2 hours.
After the first coat we learned to make the skimcoat thicker.
When the concrete dried I use 50 grit sand paper and started sanding several, I mean several times to get all the rough edges and marks smooth. We used a vacuum to make sure we removed all the dust after that we cleaned the counter top with a damp clean cloth.
I added a total of 4 skimcoat layers with sanding and cleaning between each layer.
The last skimcoat I let sit for 24 hours before I sanded.
The last sanding session, I say session because it took about 4 hours, seriously, to sand. I first used 50 grit sand paper until it was smooth. Next, I used 100 grit sand paper and lastly using 220 until I got a little shine to the concrete.
It isn’t perfect probably because we are not professionals. 🙂 Actually since her bathroom is going to be rustic I think this type of counter top will work perfectly.
We took a concrete stain and a brush and gave the counter top a little rustic color. The stain is the stain I used on our back porch floor. If you missed that post on how I stained my concrete floors you can check that out ⇒ How I painted and stained my concrete floors.
I did two coats of stain, sanding with 220 grit sand paper between coats.
I had to hand sand the sinks since the sander would not fit to sand it smooth. It gave the bowls a wooden bowl look, which does give a more rustic look. 🙂
We let that sit for 24 hours, gave it two coats of sealer, using it as the directions stated.
I rolled it on with a sponge roller and she came behind me using the applicator to smooth and even the sealer.
This will have to dry before we move onto our next project.

Recapping on what we have done:
Painted cabinets and changed handles.
Changed out light fixtures
Applied a concrete overlay to the counter tops
Can’t wait to share with you the framing up the contractor mirror with some rustic flare! That will be next Friday. Hope you come back to see that DIY. 🙂

Decorating our home on a budget is my thrill. I think a home can look beautiful without breaking the bank. Your home should bring the best out of you and make you feel happy. You should smile every time you enter your home. 🙂
What color did you tint your stain? It turned out beautiful! Great job!
Thank you!
I used Valspar Semi-Transparent Concrete stain color – Vaquero Brown.
