Hello friends!

Today I am going to do a DIY making acorns out of another holiday decor.  So go up in your attic, down your basement or wherever you store your Easter decorations and grab some plastic Easter eggs.  We are going to make some cute fall decor today! 🙂

I received an email from Pier 1 the other day and as I was looking at their fall items I came to these cute little acorns.  You know what I was thinking when I saw them, right?  YEP…. the DIY part of my brain was pumping faster than normal….it was forcing me to say… “I could make these”.

Here is what you are going to need:

• 3 plastic Easter eggs
• 3 to 4 pine cones
• 3 faux corn on the cob @DollarTree
• small twigs
• twine
• scissors
• glue gun and glue sticks
• spray paint
• craft paint

Let’s get started!

You could use just the plastic Easter egg if you want, but I wanted mine to be a bit larger.  I saw the corn at Dollar tree and thought this would work perfect along with half of the egg.

I cut the corn in half, pulled out the stalk and separated the eggs.

I sprayed them with one good coat of brown spray paint.  I used Valspar spray paint for plastic surfaces in brown.

After the paint dried I attached the egg to the cut part of the corn.

You will want a pointed end and a larger end to each piece.

*TIP:  I used the bottom of the egg to the top part of the corn and the top of the egg to the end of the corn.

After the glue has cooled.  I took my jute twine, glue gun, glue sticks and started wrapping the narrow part of the piece.

I dabbed a little glue to the narrow tip.

I took the jute twine and started to spiral it around the tip all the way down 1/3 of the piece.

I did the 3 steps to all 6 of my pieces.  Making sure I wrapped the twine around the narrow part of the piece.

Next was making the acorn top with pine cones.  I have a neighbor that has a pine tree so I walked over and picked up a few for my project.  If you don’t have pine cones you can purchase them at any store now that the fall decorations are out.  Here is a site that you can order from if you want to click on the picture it will take you to it.

I cut off the little petals and glued a straight row around the edge of the twine.

I kept gluing until I filled in all the top portion.  I did about 5 layers of pinecone petals.

After I added the pine cone petals to all 6 pieces I grabbed some craft paint.  I wanted my jute twine more of a patina red.  I took a burnt red and a metallic gold craft paint and mixed the two together.

I grabbed a limb from our backyard and cut a few small pieces to glue to the top of my acorn.

Making sure that it had a “V” to it.

I wanted a little deeper brown so I grabbed my metallic glaze and painted the pine petals and stem.

I know it had a lot of steps and to be honest….for the price of the Pier 1 acorns I did think to myself…..I should of just bought them, but I have to say I love how mine turned out and it was fun making them.  I would of had to paint the ones at Pier 1 because I like the patina color of mine.  PLUS….I got 6 acorn instead of only 3.

Sometimes making a craft is about having exactly what you want.  I spent $4.00 for the 3 ears of corn and 1 roll of jute twine, everything else I had on hand.  They will match my home fall decor so the time of working on this DIY was so worth it! 🙂
