I am sharing a fun DIY with you today; this will be part of my Easter mantel.
Here are the supplies I am using:
- 1 tri-fold project board – Dollar Tree
- tape measure
- yard stick
- pencil
- scissors or utility knife
- duct tape
- something round to trace scallops
- paint
Faux Awning Decoration
Step 1 – Measure your space
Using a tape measure to figure out the size you need to make your awning. Measure width and length.
For my measurements, I am measuring the width and the length of my two doors.
Take the project board and measure out the width you need. I taped two pieces to each end of the project board to fit width of my mirror.
Using duct tape to add the additional board pieces.
Step 2 – Draw your shape
To create a drape with scallops I traced around a candle holder.
I created a pattern in the measurements of 7 inches tall and 43 1/2 inches wide. To keep my awning on the mirror I made tabs to tuck behind the mirror.
Step 4 – Shaping your board
To create the drape, I measured 3 inches from the scalloped edge, marked and drew a line.
I bent the board on the line to create a drape to the awning.
Step 3 – Cut out the pattern
Step 5 – Create the sides
I measured the length of my front awning and the drape of the scallops, cutting two triangles for the side. Using duct tape, I added the sides to the front awning.
I added it to the mirror for a trial run.
Step 6 – Painting the awning
To decorate the awning, I drew lines to create panels. To give it an awning look I painted the sections with black and white craft paint.
I painted the underneath solid black.
To hang the awning to my mirror, I tucked in the tabs behind the mirror.
Ignore the top of the mirror frame, I will have that covered later. Look how cute!

Very cute Terrie!
Thanks Jenna. I am so happy with it, wasn’t for sure how it would work, but it is exactly as I thought. Now to hide the top of the mirror and decorate the rest of the mantel. Happy Spring!
