Welcome to our first 2025 Creative Craft blog hop.
Today, I am giving an old ginger jar another makeover, this is the jar I made over for Kristin’s office. Since she changed jobs and her new office is smaller, she had no need for it. I decided to decorate it in our home, but first it needs a bit of a change to fit my style.
I want to mention, Sara Birdz of a Feather and Donna Modern on Monticello they both are the master minds for the monthly blog hop, they both do a fantastic job gathering up talented crafters to provide you inspiration. This month we have 10 crafters sharing cute crafts with you, at the bottom of my page, I will share each participant’s link to their craft.
DIY Pottery Barn Textured Earthenware Vase Dupe
I searched online for inspiration on something similar to this ginger jar.
I decided to discard the lid, I liked the look of the Pottery Barn’s, the Textured Earthenware Vase. It’s very similar to the shape of the vase I have, also I love the texture the vase has.
First step – add texture.
I applied joint compound all over the vase in a thick layer with my hands.
Making the details into the joint compound I used my cake icing detailing comb.
I made random strokes going in all different directions, just like the inspirational vase, sidewise and an up and down pattern.
I let the texture dry for 24 hours. After it dried, I used 220 grit sandpaper to smooth down all the rough edges.
To remove all the dust from sanding in the groves I dusted with a chip brush and then wiped it down with a damp cloth.
Second step – paint.
Here comes the fun part, painting my vase. For the base coat, I painted with Basketry by Behr. I let the paint dry completely.
Adding more colors to add depth to the vase, I used melted chocolate and terracotta mixed together. For more layers I used the base coat, basketry and then antique white.
To apply the layers, I used a wet paper towel, I dipped the damp paper towel into the brown paint.
Tapped it onto my vase, I did not do the entire vase, I did a small section at a time with the brown paint.
To blend, I added the base color the same way. Blending to get the look I wanted.
Adding the Antique white the same way.
I continue to do these steps until the entire vase was painted.
I took a chip brush and the antique white paint and dry brushed onto the entire vase lightly for highlights.
Last step – seal your work.
I sprayed one coat to the entire vase with a matt sealer.
I added faux tulips to my DIY textured vases. This vase cost a fraction compared to the Pottery Barn Vases, I added my own spin to the color to create the vase to fit my home.
It is the perfect size and shape to sit anywhere in our home. Stay tune later to see where I style it.

Stay strong and God bless! ♥
Decorating our home on a budget is my thrill. I think a home can look beautiful without breaking the bank. Your home should bring the best out of you and make you feel happy. You should smile every time you enter your home. 🙂
Great makeover, Teri. Love the natural texture. Another great reason to thrift shop.
Thank you so much Carol.
You put some hard work and effort into remaking this vase and it looks fantastic! I would have never guessed it was a makeover. I enjoy seeing your projects on the craft hop every month.
Thanks Donna. I don’t mind hard work, which this really wasn’t, it all pays off.
Wow, I love how your transformation turned out. It look amazing! Pottery Barn is my favorite store so I’m sure you saved lots of money with your DIY version.
I would love to say I have some Pottery Barn items but I don’t. I can’t part with the money things are. Thank you Allyson for your sweet comment.
This is so creative and beautiful! I love your painting technique – it really highlights the texture.

Well thank you Ann. You know me by now, I love my layering.
Terrie, you did a great job of completely transforming the patina of this piece. It looks fabulous! Blessings, Cecilia @ My Thrift Store Addiction
Well, thank you Cecilia I truly appreciate it. Have a blessed day!
Girl! You are so talented. If I did this it would look like a mess. Great job!
I doubt very much if you did this it wouldn’t look like a mess, but the complete opposite. Thanks for the sweet compliment, Tammy,
I love the way it turned out Terrie, wow, you worked some magic! Thanks for sharing the details of your process!
I am happy you like the new look of the vase too. Thanks Jenna for coming by and commenting. Have a blessed day!
Oh my, Terrie, this is beautiful! You really reworked that ginger jar into something gorgeous! And I agree with Sara – Kristin will probably want it back now! I know I would!
Well, thank you Gail. I am very happy with this vase. It looked good in Kristin’s office all blue and gold, but I truly love how it looks now. Thank you Gail for your sweet comment.
Wow Terrie, that’s quite a transformation! The texture and colour are lovely and compliment the flowers perfectly. Kristin may just want it back :).
I remember doing the first makeover here on the creative craft hop as well. I am loving my vase. If she wants it back, you know us moms will give with no regrets. I hope she doesn’t want it back. ha! Thanks Sara.
