DIY SKINNY BENCH
There is nothing better than making something yourself with scrap wood. Well, at least for this DIYer. Let’s make a skinny bench.
Using a Rustic Skinny Bench pattern to help me build the bench, I found on Etsy. It provides all the measurements, tools to use and step by step instructions, very easy to follow.
I pulled out some wood we had in our shed, which kept the cost below $10 for me.
Step One – Cutting the pieces.
First, I cut a 2 x 8 board for the seat of the bench with a circular saw. I measured twice and cut once.
Using 2 x 2 boards I cut 4 pieces for the legs of the bench.
Cut smaller support boards for the legs.
Changing the degree of my saw to 15, I cut the ends of each 2 x 2 board pieces.
Put the legs together to make sure they all fit together.
Step Two – Distressing the boards.
Now to distress the seat of the beach, cutting, denting and scratching. To do this, I used my circular saw, grinder and a utility knife.
With a sander, I sanded the board smooth.
Step Three – Drill pocket holes.
Putting the legs of the bench together, drilled pocket holes to the 2 x 2 pieces. Two to one end and one to each side of the support boards.
This is how the leg boards should look.
Step Four – Assemble the legs
Place wood glue inside each support pocket hole before screwing. With wood screws connect support boards. (Leave the 8 top leg pocket holes unglued for now).
Distressed the legs the same way as the seat, sand and wipe clean.
Step Five – Staining the boards
Before putting the bench together stain the boards. Once the stain has time to dry apply Minwax paste finishing wax.
Part Six – Adding the legs.
Adding wood glue to the top pocket holes and attach the legs to the bench seat with wood screws. Measuring the legs to center at each end of the bench seat.
I’m really proud of my bench and how it turned out. I hope this inspires you to give it a go. You can make this bench in any size you like.
