How To Make a Wavy Air-Dry Clay Bowl

Step One:  Take a piece of clay the size of a baseball.

Work the clay by kneading until it warms up and easier to work with.

Step Two:  With the rolling pin, roll out the clay until it is flat,

about 1/4 of an inch thick and the shape of a circle.

*It doesn’t have to be a perfect circle.

Step Three:  Dip your finger into water and smooth along the edges.

Step Four:  Take a piece of saran wrap or waxed paper sprayed with oil to the container.

I am using a Dollar Tree glass cylinder vase turned upside down.

Step Five:  Place your clay over the container and shape into a ruffle pattern.

Pinch the clay between two fingers creating a ruffle.  Make different size ruffles around the cylinder.

Step Six:  With your finger and water smooth the surface of your clay until it is as smooth as possible.

Just for fun, I craved my name and year to the bottom of my bowl.

Let the bowl dry for 2 hours.

After two hours of drying upside down, take it off of the container and place it in a dish that is similar in shape and a little larger in size.  And continue to let sit until it is completely dried.

I placed paper to support the ruffles.

Again, I took more water on my finger and smoothed the edges and inner part of my bowl.

Step Seven:  Sand all the rough edges.

I used 120 grit sandpaper and sanded the rough spots and edges of my bowl.

Clean all the dust from your bowl with a clean, soft brush.

Step Eight:   Paint your bowl.

To paint my bowl, I first painted it all over with antique white chalk paint.

Using a wet paper towel, I dabbed brown and antique white paint until I got the look I wanted.

Once it had time to dry, give it two coats of high gloss clear sealer, letting dry between coats.

Step Nine:  Melt your candle wax.

I chipped out the candle from the container into a microwave safe container.

I used the wick from the candle.  Gluing the wick in the center of the bowl.

Microwave the wax for 2 minutes, depending on the type of candle wax and microwave power you might have to add or subtract the minutes.

Gently pour the hot wax into the bowl.

Let the wax harden.

Cut the wick.

You can get creative with air-dry clay. So many different shapes and sizes of bowls.  I also made a candle plate.  It is still in the drying process.

I have so many places I can place my wavy candle bowl.  I might have to make a couple more.
