Today, I am so excited to be sharing what I created for you with a Dollar Tree toy!! I took two tumbling block games from Dollar Tree, wood glue and wood filler to create a home decor piece to style in our home. With my step-by-step tutorial you will be able to make the piece for your home too.
How to Make a Wooden Link Chain
Supplies you need:
- 2 Tumbling block games from Dollar Tree
- Wood glue
- Wood filler
- Hand sander
- Stain & paint
You will only need 96 pieces to make a 4-link chain.
With the 96 pieces, connect two blocks together to form one longer piece. You will end with 48 pieces.
Let the glue set for an hour.
One Wooden ClosedLink
- Taking 12 sections to create 3 squares. Gluing the ends together, let glue set.
- Layer the three squares together, gluing one on top of the other, let glue set.
Connecting Links
- With 27 sections make 9 U-shape pieces, let glue set.
- Glue 3 u-shape sections on top of each other.
- With the last 9 sections layer three together creating 3 single pieces.
You should have:
- one wooden link
- three one opened end links
- three single sections
Let your pieces sit for at least 12 hours.
Prep your links
Add wood filler to each space where it was glued together, spread evenly filling all the cervices.
Let the wood filler dry completely then sand with 120 grit sandpaper.
Creating the Chain Link
- Slipping one opened end link into the one full closed link
- Add glue to each end of an open link
- Add a single piece to close the link
- Do the same to the other side.
- the next link, slip it through one of the end links, laying it flat, making sure you keep it level. Glue the single piece to it.
- Let the glue set.
- Fill in all the crevices with wood filler, let dry.
- Sand your wooden links with 120 grit sandpaper. I am using a handheld sander, finishing the parts I can’t reach by hand.
- Wipe down your chain with a clean damp cloth.
You can leave your wooden link chain as is.
Or you can stain your chain.
Or you can stain it and dry brush paint to it.
I love how this turned out and especially the price!
I hope you enjoyed my craft today and inspires you to make one for your home. Don’t forget to check out the other crafters and what they are sharing with us in the hop.

Decorating our home on a budget is my thrill. I think a home can look beautiful without breaking the bank. Your home should bring the best out of you and make you feel happy. You should smile every time you enter your home. 🙂
Very interesting DIY craft, Terrie. I can’t say that I’ve ever seen this product at Dollar Tree, but definitely worth looking for.
I haven’t seen this toy but a smaller version of the tumbling box. This game has more pieces than the older version, which is great, right?
I would have never thought to make these out of those blocks at the Dollar Tree. So very clever and you can do so many different things with them. Pinned and thanks for sharing some inspiration.
Thanks Donna. I agree, that are so many things you can do with those game pieces. I love how the link chained turned out.
Terrie, I love the square chain and I haven’t seen this idea before! Blessings, Cecilia @My Thrift Store Addiction
I love how they turned out and for only $2.50 can’t beat it. Thanks Cecilia.
I have never seen one square before. I really like this and clever materials.
Not often do you see square ones on Instagram, I saw them styled in a furniture store and fell in love with the look. So easy to make, a little time consuming, but for the cost can’t beat it.
Wow Terrie, I am beyond impressed, your mind works in mysterious and very creative ways!! I would have never thought of using the game pieces to create such an amazing decorative piece! Your detailed tutorial is awesome as usual, thank you!
Thank you Jenna. I did have fun on this craft and will enjoy them styled in our home.
Very clever, Terrie. I never would have imagined a wood link chain while looking at that tumbling block game!
Thanks Ann, it was a fun project. A little creative thinking on joining the links together but so fun.
Your wooden link chain is very cool, Terri! It looks great as a decorative accent! They’re so many possibilities for what you can do with it! The dollar store tumbling block game is very popular to use for making crafts!
Thanks Gail, the game pieces are used in a lot of projects for sure. Even if you don’t want to use those you could buy square dowel rods and do the same without all the wood filler. I love how this turned out and it was fun putting it together.
This is genius! I can’t wait to go to the Dollar Tree so that I can make one of these. You did a great job with putting this together, the sanding and filling with wood filler. It looks seamless!!!!! Thanks so much for sharing. Pined for later!
If your Dollar Tree doesn’t have the game pieces Tammy use a square dowel rod, less cuts and seams. But the same steps would work. Let me know if you do make this and tell me how yours came out. Thanks Tammy.
