It’s time for another monthly Creative Craft hop, this month we have 8 crafters sharing some fun crafts. Thanks to Sara, Birdz of a Feather for being our sweet host each month. The bottom of my page, I will share each participant’s link to their craft.
If you are coming over from Donna, Modern on Monticello, welcome!
For my craft this month, I will be using a piece of scrap wood to make a wooden shaker peg rack to place in our kitchen.
If you want to know how I made the peg rack keep on reading for the full tutorial.
HOW TO BUILD A SHAKER PEG RACK
Supplies used:
- 1×6 board
- wooden shaker pegs
- drill
- circular saw or table saw
- hammer
- wood glue
- paint or stain
- saw tooth picture hangers
First Step
Cut the board to size to fit your space. I am placing my rack on a small wall; my board is 18 inches.
Second Step
Measure out evenly in the center of your board where you want each peg to be placed. I placed mine every 4 1/2 inches. Three pegs total.
Third Step
Using a piece of masking tape to the tip of the drill bit to provide the depth of the tenon of the peg. Use a drill bit that is the same size as the tenon of your peg.
I decided to drill straight into the board instead of a slant. I stopped when the board met the tape.
Fourth Step
Sand the entire board with 120 grit sandpaper.
Fifth Step
Add a bead of glue inside the drilled holes.
Tap the peg in lightly into the glued slot. Make sure to wipe the excess glue off.
Sixth Step
Once the glue has dried give your rack a color of choice.
Last Step
Hanging your shaker peg rack in two ways.
- Drilling a hole at each end making sure to countersink your holes so that you can cover the screws.
- For decorative purposes and not anything heavy, add two saw tooth picture hooks to the back of the board.
That’s it! Hang it in place and decorate!
I’m so happy with how it turned out! Gives the small little space some personality.
Thanks so much for stopping by the blog today! I hope this DIY shaker peg rack tutorial was helpful and inspires you to make one for your home!

Wow, Terrie! Your peg board rack looks fabulous! Excellent tutorial, too! And you really have some serious woodworking skills!!!! Your hubby must be very proud of you!
Thanks Gail, little by little I am taking over his work bench in the garage. 🙂
Peg boards are always so useful and you did a great job on making this one. Also a great way to use up scrap pieces. Thanks for sharing it. Pinned.
Thank you Donna. I do like how it looks on the small wall.
Wow Terrie, your peg rack is so professionally done! You have great tool skills, I wish I was brave enough to use tools 😂 I love the way you styled your rack, and it looks so pretty in your kitchen!
Thanks Jenna! I started doing it myself since my hubby was getting tired of being asked to cut this or drill that. Little by little I am taking over his tool bench. 🙂
Terrie, I love your handmade peg board–pinned! Blessings, Cecilia @My Thrift Store Addiction
Thanks Celilia, I appreciate it. It turned out so cute and functional at that.
I love this project SO much Terrie and envy that I don’t have wall space in the kitchen to do this :). It really does add personality to the space!
Thanks Sara. I have always looked at that small little space, too small for this and to big to stay bare (my thought). This fit perfect and gives me more space to decorate. 🙂
This is such a perfect thing to make out of scrap wood ( you know I have a ton laying around!) Pretty and functional. What’s not to love with that? Great tutorial, love that you broke it down step by step. Thanks so much for sharing. It looks fabulous in your kitchen.
Thanks Tammy, I would love to have an island to add the peg rack to, but I have a small wall. 🙂 It will be so fun to decorate come the holidays. That’s how my mind thinks, what can I do for the holidays? 🙂
