HOW TO STENCIL AN ACCENT WALL

Today will be the last of the DIYs for my $100 Room Challenge ~ Master bathroom.  The focal walls I wanted to address are getting finished.  Working on the long window wall and the wall behind the bathroom toilet.  After this I can start decorating my room.  YAY!!

For the focal walls I decided to stencil the two walls.  Here are the two walls now.

Since I decided to stencil both walls I reached out to Cutting Edge Stencil.  They were kind enough to send me their Trellis Allover Stencil for our Master bathroom.  Looking through and choosing from all their stencils was such a difficult chore.  They have so many beautiful styles.  I narrowed it down to a trellis type style.  After looking at all of the certain types I finally picked one.  I was so excited when my stencil arrived.  They carefully packaged it so it wouldn’t have any marks from shipping it to me.  I took it out of the package and kept it flat until I was ready to use it.

Cutting Edge Stencils also sent me a Stencil Essential Kit for an easier application.  Boy, did they send the right tools to help me with the process.  A clip on level, stencil brush and a foam roller with handle.

Let’s get to stenciling my bathroom walls, shall we?

Things you will need to stencil a wall.

  • Cutting Edge Stencil
  • Stencil Essential Kit ~ foam roller with handle, stencil brush and a level
  • Painter’s tape
  • Stencil Adhesive ~ I didn’t use it due to my walls being textured.
  • Paint tray
  • Paper towels
  • Water and clean cloth
  • Paint

For those that know me, you know that I am not one to go for the simple things in life.  With my walls I am going to use three different paint colors for my wall design.  The paint I had on hand.

  • Perfect Greige is the wall paint in our Master bedroom
  • Pure Earth is on the walls in the rest of our home
  • Edgecomb Gray is the cabinet color in the Master bathroom and the furniture in the Master bedroom
  • DIY Seattle Gray is the base wall color.  Keeping that on hand for any touch ups I will have.

First thing I wanted to do was find the center of the wall.  I wanted to start my design in the center.  I measured the wall and place an X in the center with painter’s tape.  As you can see I placed a trash bag right over the tank to protect it from paint.

Took 4 pieces of painter’s tape and attached it to each corner of the stencil and placed it on the wall.  I love having the level to guide me to a straight pattern.

It’s time to paint.  I rolled my foam roller into the paint and then rolled it onto a piece of paper towel. You will want to make sure there is little paint on the roller.

I rolled on the paint lightly to the area on the stencil.

I did the same thing with all the colors I applied to the wall.

To start the next section, I took the stencil and matched the bottom row of the stencil to the top row of the painted wall.

Did the same as I did with the first.  When I came to a corner I just matched patterns and let the stencil wrap to the corner without bending it.

I used the stencil brush for the hard to reach areas.  Tapping the brush into the paint on it’s side and not flat into the paint.  Tap off all the paint.  Dab onto the stencil.

When my stencil was getting thick of paint around the edges, I placed my stencil in warm water and wiped lightly.  Making sure the stencil is good and dry before starting again.

Just keeping up the steps.  It is starting to take shape.

Last step is to fix the boo-boos.  When stenciling you are not going to have perfectly straight lines.  You will have some bleeds.

What I did was take a fine bristle brush and traced around to clean up as much as I can.

After tracing around the pattern.

I will be sharing the finish look tomorrow on the Master Bathroom Reveal ~ $100 Room Challenge.  Be sure to come back and see the finish bathroom.

  1. Your bathroom looks amazing! I love everything! I love so many of the stencils, but the one that keeps catching my eye is the Santa Ana.

    1. Thanks Jill. You are so sweet to enter the giveaway. I wished I could give all my readers a stencil. That would be so awesome. The Santa Ana stencil is so pretty too!

  2. I absolutely love that stenciling has made its return to the decorating world, and how far it has come from the days of stenciling duck and heart boarders. Lol
My husband and I recently purchased our first home, and I am a huge DIYer. I love cutting edge stencils, and purchased a stencil and made over our entryway wall. Now it’s my favorite place in our house! Our decorating budget is small, and my diy dreams our large, so I would love to win the stencil giveaway! I have my eye on the metro hex tile stencil for a fun project for both our bathroom and our front steps. I want to tile a welcome mat outside our front door, and paint a cute greeting on it. Thanks for all of the detailed tips on stenciling, and for the fabulous giveaway! I’m new to your blog from Instagram, and love your projects! 💕

    1. Thank you so much and thank you for joining in the giveaway. I am so excited for you and your new home. I love DIYing and decorating on a budget.

  3. First, wow! What a huge impact your stencil wall made. Second, I liked your tutorial. As you know I am a wee bit stencil challenged. Perhaps because I don’t start in the middle which would explain why it never comes out even. So I did visit cutting edge stencils. Not sure how you picked just one. Was thinking of trying an accent wall in our master bath behind the mirror but then I came across the Kindness Mandala Stencil and I fell in love. It would look so beautiful in our bedroom and would motivate me to tackle our ceiling. Am now on my way to check out your reveal.

    1. Thank you Kelli. I was really afraid that the stencil wall was too different for some to like. I always want a pattern to start in the center for look purposes. I have tried to start at the top like normal but the pattern to me seems off. I guess that’s the perfectionists in me. I went over to see the Kindness Mandala Stencil oh how pretty. That would look so cool on a ceiling. Yes….do that. I hope you win!

  4. Absolutely gorgeous! I love the colors you used and think it looks so elegant. It was hard to choose between all their stencils but I really like the SHIPLAP WALL STENCIL! The room I want to paint will have a farmhouse look and I think the shiplap will be an amazing touch! You did a fabulous job!

  5. Oh my goodness!! Such a great giveaway! There are sooo many darling stencils that I would love to get! I love the way your accent wall turned out! Everything is looking amazing!!

    1. Thank you Haley! They really do have so many beautiful stencils. Oh yeah the Diament would look awesome and so would the Granada. I am wishing you luck on the giveaway!

  6. Hi, I just came across your Instagram and love what you’ve done with the stencil. I’m feeling so inspired! I checked out their website and I think my favorite is the Jewel tile stencil.

  7. This is absolutely decadent and much cleaner and better for your walls than sizing and paper. I fell in love with the Birds on the Wire stencil! What a great site and idea!!!

    1. Thank you Chassidy. I wasn’t for sure about the difference on colors but so glad I did it. Never know what it will look like until you do it. I love the brick stencil too. Best of luck!

    1. Oh Deone! I love the Jewel Tile one too. That would be so pretty in your home. Where would you stencil it with? Good luck thanks for joining in on the Giveaway. Good luck my friend!

  8. You did such a great job! I love how you used the multiple colors. I would love one to stencil around my fireplace. Have a great day girly!

    1. I think adding a stencil around your fireplace would look amazing. Go check out their designs and come back and comment with the one you would love to win. I would love to see you win girlfriend!

  9. Awesome job! I used to be a Faux Finish painter. Our business used cutting edge stencil and I love them. That level is genius! Great job. Can’t wait for the reveal!

    1. Thank you Tammy. Trying to get a lot accomplished so I can get back to my Fall decorating. I put that on the back burner. I just love the people over at Cutting Edge Stencil. They were a pleasure to work with. You need to enter the giveaway.

  10. Looking great Terrie and love the color combination. I have never stenciled with a roller. For our home if I stencil a piece I use good stencil brushes and tap the excess off on Bounty paper towel. I know Bounty, they work the best for this application. I ponce depending how faded or dark I want the stencil.

Terrie you are knocking out of the park with this $100 makeover. You have a beautiful updated bathroom for little money. I applaud you my friend.

I can’t wait to see it finished. I’m excited for you.

    Cindy

    1. Awe thank you so much Cindy! With the bathroom tile I wanted to bring in a color on the wall to not fight with it. You know me nothing ever simple, right? Thank you for your sweet sweet comment. I do appreciate it. You need to enter the Giveaway. Go check out the stencils and come back with one of your favorites in the comments.
