Welcome back to Kristin’s kitchen makeover, we are moving into the dining area of the kitchen. The kitchen part is almost finished, with just a few loose ends, we did change all the almond plug-ins and light switches white. We need to install the new microwave and paint the walls, until then we will address the other part of the kitchen.
Here is a snapshot of the dining area before we started on the focal wall.
For this part of the room, we will be giving the back wall a coat of paint, change light fixture and finish the table project.
Wall project
To tie in the color of the kitchen cabinets to the dining area, we decided to paint the focal wall the same color as the bottom cabinets.
Before we could design the wall pattern, we needed to remove the chair rail trim. When removing it, the trim took pieces of the dry wall paper.
To repair the damage, I used two products; BIN Primer to seal the ripped drywall and to smooth the damage joint compound.
I used a putty knife and removed all the loose paper.
Sanded the area.
Wiped the area clean.
Applying the BIN primer with a paint brush to seal all the damaged drywall.
Let that dry for 2 hours, applied a thin coat of joint compound. I let that dry completely. Sanded the area smoothly with 120 grit sandpaper. Clean the entire wall before painting.
Another “fix” I had to do was the corner crown moulding details.
To have the panels look decent in each corner, the bottom part of the detail piece had to be cut off. I customed the look, it’s not perfect but it works for us.
We still have to paint the other walls, so don’t mind the blue paint on the white wall.
We are painting the wall the same color as the bottom cabinets. Powell Gray a Benjamin Moore paint in eggshell.
I gave the wall three coats of paint. Trimming out with a paint brush first then rolling the rest of the wall.
Painting the crown molding in the same color as the wall makes this small space seem larger, and the 8 ft ceiling seem to be taller.
Light fixture
Changing out the light fixture was a simple job. It took both Mr. Tip and I to change out the fixture.
Kristin chose an 8 – Light Dimmable Modern Linear Chandelier in the color brushed brass, from Wayfair.
This was by far the easiest light fixture installation I have helped with.
Farmhouse table
If you remember, we striped the table down to the natural wood. Using polyethylene in a flat sheen, giving it 3 coats to the top of the table and bench, the rest two coats.
Looking back at the table before.
It did take some effort to strip the table from the old stain, but we did it.
We still need to do one more coat of poly to the top then we can call it done.
Even when the poly is still wet, we are loving the color of the table.
We cleaned up the mess we created that day and called it a night.
We have maybe two more full days in the kitchen before it will be complete. I’ll be posting the final reveal soon so keep your eyes peeled. You’ll soon get to see Kristin’s kitchen makeover in all its glory. I can’t wait to show you.
