MAKEOVER ON A BUDGET

Hello Friends!  Welcome back!  How did you enjoy my vignette round-up?  It was fun looking back at the groupings I posted.  I had someone ask me if all the items were new, and where do I store it all?  Here are the answers:  No, I did not go out and buy anything new to make the settings.  All the items I use are either a part of a decor setting around in my home or put away because I do not want to use them at the moment.  I store them in my craft closet or up in my attic.  I know it seems like I have a lot of items, but if you look at the settings closely you can tell that I used a lot of the same items.  Just by placing an item differently or to another arrangement could make it look like a new piece.

Today’s blog is on how I decorated a room for little cost.  Do you remember the show Decorating Cents on HGTV?  I loved that show.  I am going to do my own segment today for you.  My son purchased his first home a year ago.  He wanted a new style for his bedroom and since he didn’t have a master suite in the apartment he needed something for the bathroom also.  So we searched online for an inspirational room.  We found just what he wanted.  Just after buying his home and all the moving expenses he didn’t have a lot to spend extra on items for the two rooms.  I told him that I would make his room, as much as I could, like the inspirational photo and keep the cost low.

If you know me by now you know that I always like to have an inspirational photo or item to use.  So here is his inspirational room.

Isn’t this room beautiful?  I just love this bedroom and how masculine it looks.  I knew that he couldn’t afford everything that the inspirational room had, so I decided to just do a focal wall for his room.  He had a grey comforter set already so I had that, but everything else had to be bought.

Here is his bedroom before we started.

The room is a rectangular shape so we placed his bed along the window wall.  This is the wall I will use for the focal wall.  The opposite side of the window wall is where we put his TV.  I placed a long wall mirror on the side of the TV.

So now that I had my plan on what I was going to do. I made a list of things he already had and things I needed to purchase.

I totaled up all the items that the inspirational photos had that I wanted to use for the focal wall.  It would cost around $1799.  If I would of bought exactly the items used in the room of the inspirational photo.

Below is what I purchased:

Two sets of white sheers that I dyed a reddish/orange.  I purchased them at Ross for $4.99 a pair.  I bought two dye packs, an orange and a red cost $5.39 at Walmart.  TIP:  if you can not find the right shade for your room, dye them.  There are  several colors of dye and you can mix them up to get the perfect shade you need.

On each side of the window I placed a 11 x 14 floating document frame from Wal-mart for $7.88 each.  I chose the document type because purchasing a frame with a mat was more expensive. This way it looks like the mat matches the wall color.  The photos that I placed in the frames were just print offs from my computer.

On the night stands I placed lamps that I found at TjMaxx for $19.99 each.  One night stand is much taller than the other so I placed books under the lamps to make them the same height.  I placed a picture frame, a souvenir and his alarm clock on one table and the other one has his phone.

Next up was his bedding.  Like I said he already had a grey comforter set.  Using grey sheets (he already had) and an orange quilt, I found at Bed, Bath and Beyond for $39.98.  He didn’t want a bunch of  items on his bed so I made it as simple as I could.  The bed ruffle is just a plain black skirt.  I used the orange quilt as the main bedding.  I took his grey comforter and folded it in half placing it at the end of his bed.  TIP: To keep it in place and not having to fool with folding each time I placed safety pins and secured the two ends together this will keep the fold intact.

I decided not to use pillow shams I used his bed pillows as the shams.  For the throw pillows, I found pillow covers for little to nothing on amazon.com.  Purchased two orange pillow covers that were $2.89 each, a black and white design pillow cover for $2.49.  He had the grey pillow and the little black oblong pillow that went with his comforter set. I had some throw pillows that I wasn’t using to fill his new pillow covers with.  TIP:  Instead of replacing all new throw pillows when changing the look purchase pillow covers.  They are less expensive than purchasing new ones.

I wanted to give the floor a little bit of the design like in the inspirational photo.  I found this rug  (the right place at the right time) at Big Lots for $24.99.  Unbelievable that it matched the pillow cover that I purchased on amazon.  I knew it was close to the pattern but when I brought it home it was perfect.  How amazing was that?
On the side wall I wanted to bring some silver and mirror in the room, but didn’t want a glam look since I was going for a more masculine look.  I found three accent mirrors at TjMaxx for $7.99.  Placed them over his chest for a little decor on that wall.
That completed his bedroom.
Here is his bedroom on our budget design.
And again the inspirational room.
The grand total was $152.34,  not a bad price for a bedroom makeover.

To make the bathroom flow with the bedroom, all I did was purchase two orange floor rugs (found at Bed Bath and Beyond for $9.99 each) an orange bath towel and gray hand towel to display on his towel bar (also found at Bed Bath and Beyond for $7.99 bath towel and $5.99 hand towel)  Purchased some orange accent pieces to sit on his vanity.  The orange vase $5.99, orange bowl $3.99 and the candle $7.99)  I did the same thing with the wall art, found the picture frame at the Dollar Tree and printed off the pictures).  For this room I spent $53.93  The total for both rooms was $206.27.

Here are some photos of his bathroom.

This completes my version of Decorating Cents.  What do you think?  It isn’t over the top but still has the wow factor, in my opinion.  Just having an inspirational piece, taking inventory of things you have, making a list of things you need to finish the room and then taking time and effort on finding the right items at the best price.   I try to keep in mind not to want it ALL, get the main focal point items and add to it as you can afford them.  Don’t stress over trying to get everything now.  Rome wasn’t built in a day!
