The first week was working on the mirrors and cabinets.  I am using the paint I had left over when I painted our Master Bedroom furniture.  The paint I am using is Benjamin Moore Advance, Edgecomb Gray.  I always keep primer on hand because I am always painting something.  I love using Zinsser Bulls Eye 123 Primer.

Here is how our bathroom mirrors and cabinets looked prior to week 1.

First thing I did was removed the mirrors from the wall and gave them a light sanding, I primed and painted the frames.

When painting my mirrors, I noticed the frame had space in each corner.  I took some wood filler and filled in the spaces, sanded and painted.  Much better !

I gave the frames 3 coats of paint, sanding in between each coat.  Below, I am removing the painters tape and cleaning the mirrors.

I am placing the mirrors in one of our Guest bedrooms until we can place them back up on the wall.

Now the mirrors are finished it is time to tackle the cabinets.  I removed all the drawers and doors from the cabinets.  Since it’s so hot out in the garage I decided to turn our kitchen into my work station.

I wiped down the cabinet with Simple Green before I started priming and painting.  I normally use TSP cleaner or mineral spirits, but I didn’t have any on hand.

I wanted to share how I paint cabinet doors.  Since it has groves and crevices a roller can not get into, I use a paint brush first.  Here are the steps I take.

  1. Paint all the crevices with a paint brush

2. Use a sponge roller to paint the rest of the door.

3.  Making sure there are no drips or puddles, I take my paint brush and sweep away.

4.  I give it one more swoop with my sponge roller and wipe off the edges.

The reason I like to wipe off the edges is to prevent more drips and drying of uneven paint.

Painting cabinets is not a hard job as I type this it isn’t a fun job either.  I would have to say it takes a lot of time and patience to do it right.  Do not rush the prep work, drying time or placing it back together.  Give each step the effort and time it needs.  All the time and effort will pay off in the end.

I also painted my little vanity chair and changed up the fabric.  To see the step by step tutorial you can check that out ⇒ VANITY STOOL UPDATE.

I had the paint left over from painting our front door so zero cost for that part.  I did buy the fabric which cost a total of $3.27.

As of today I still have one more coat to paint on the vanity cabinets and the front of the doors to do.  Once they are completed I can add the handles and place them back into the cabinets.

Here are my plans for the upcoming week.

  • Picking out a color to paint the walls
  • Deciding if I want to stencil the walls 🙂
  • Painting the walls
  • Detailing the patterned tile around the garden tub
  • Paint the grout lines of the existing tile to a more brighter color

So far on the budget.  The fabric was $3.27 !! Using what I have on hand helps with the budget.  I have plenty of room to continue onto next week with the budget!  Hope you keep coming back for the process of my project updating our Master bathroom.  I have been giving a little daily update on my stories as well if you want to keep up with my challenge.

  1. Wow!! Your bathroom is really coming along! It shows how much can be accomplished with little money and lots of work!! I can’t wait to see it all come together!

  2. I can’t wait to see this room when you’re finished. It’s going to look so good. You’re doing a great job staying on budget. I hope you choose stenciling because I really want to see how you do that. 😀

    1. I did pick out the stencil I want to you. Just waiting on that to come in. I finally picked out the paint I want to paint the walls. It is finally coming together. Now maybe thrift shopping for something to use on a wall for display purposes. Thanks for stopping by Michelle!

  3. The advance paint that you used is my favorite paint and you are lucky that you have some leftover. You are doing such a great job with your budget and I am looking forward to seeing your room progress next week.

    1. When painting furniture it is my all time favorite paint. I have tried the Chalk paint that everyone raves about and I am not a fan of it for furniture or at least not a large piece. I love using chalk paint on my little craft projects but not for furniture. I know, paint isn’t as inexpensive as it once was. I am SO happy I didn’t have to go by anymore that’s for sure.

I am looking at a stencil which will take a big chunk of my budget alone.

  4. Things are moving along and look great. You nailed with budget to give yourself room. Prepping for paint and patience is key. If you rush the process it doesn’t work right. Great advice to put in your post.

Looking forward to see what it is next to the room.

  5. Painting is therapeutic to me – but I haven’t braved painting cabinets yet! I imagine the time and effort in the prep and drying stages makes allll the difference for a long lasting cure. Can’t wait to see what’s next!

    1. Kayla, When I first painted a cabinet I did a lot of search “HOW TO”. I gathered so many different tips and tricks to learn before I started tackling it for myself. I didn’t want my cabinets to look like they were painted. I wanted them to look factory painted ones. The waiting is hard but I kept thinking it’s the best thing to do and would work on something else. I am sure you would be able to paint cabinets.

    1. Thanks for you kind comment. I can’t wait to get the walls painted so I can place the mirrors back up to see the progress. It will make the room brighter. Happy designing this week Rebecca!

  6. What color are your cabinets going to be? Did I miss that? I LOVE LOVE LOVE the color they are right now with the wood showing through. The patina is fantastic. Makes me what to find some brown wood cabinets and do this to them. And you know I don’t want to paint. Love the stool too. It’s all going to look great put together!

    1. Cindy what you are seeing is the primer. Girl! I am using Benjamin Moore Edgecomb gray. Which actually is a pale white. I have to make a decision on the wall paint. I am torn between a pale blue or a pale khaki color. I hate the decision making. I know it is just paint but I want to do it and keep it. Thanks the stool one another one I painted the color once didn’t like it and painted it again blue. Easy fix but doing the walls would cost a lot more to replace. So glad you are joining us on the challenge. It will be so fun looking at everyone’s reveal.

    1. It is the least expensive way to change the look. Although paint is becoming expensive now. Can’t wait to get the paint on the walls. First I have to find the perfect color I want. ha!

    1. Thanks Jennifer. I wasn’t for sure if I should paint the mirrors or leave them the bronze color. The room only has one window and it doesn’t get much light. My thought was to brighten the room by painting the frames of the mirror. I do love how they turned out, can’t wait to get it all put together to get the real look of it all. Have fun designing this week!
