RE-PURPOSED SHUTTER INTO A SHELF

Hey there, welcome to Decorate and More with Tip! Here on my blog I share how you can decorate your home on a budget.  I share how to make it, revamp it, re-purpose it or give it a makeover.  I hope I inspire you to create something beautiful for your home. 🙂

I am working on the wall behind our sofa where I placed my DIY Sunburst Mirror.  I am adding something to the wall to complement the mirror.

If you missed the tutorial on my sunburst mirror you can click here DIY SUNBURST MIRROR.

I moved both, the frame picture and the bi-fold door to another part of the room.

I am going to bring my shutter down from the attic.  I purchased this shutter several years ago.  I am not too sure if I found the shutter at a thrift store or if my neighbor found it for me. ha!  Anyway…it has seen itself around my home.  I cut the shutter in half to place on my Christmas mantel, I used one of the shutters for July 4th decorations, it’s even been out on our front porch.  Like I said it has been every where here at the Tip Manson. 🙂

I am going to make two shutter shelves by taking the two shutters and some scrap wood.  I am sharing the tutorial on how I am making them just in case you want to make a pair for yourself.

HOW TO MAKE A SHUTTER SHELF

Items you will need

  • two shutters  (each shutter is 27″ long and 14″ wide)
  •  1″ x 6″ x 3′ board
  • circular saw
  • nail gun or hammer and nails
  • drill or screwdriver
  • 4 picture rings
  • wood screws
  • paint and stain
  • sand paper
  • paint brush
  • sealer
  • tape measure

The size I am sharing fits my shutters.  To find the best size for your shutter measure the width of your shutter for the size of shelf you need.

  1. Cut your board the length of your shutter – I cut two 14″ pieces
  2. Cut 4 triangles – to do this I cut a 4″ x 4″ square –  I made a diagonal line and cut on the line with my circular saw.

Using a nail gun I attached the top part of my shelf to the two triangles pieces.  Making sure to keep the longest straight part of the triangle the back of the shelf.

I applied Minwax English Chestnut to both shelves.

Now on to the shutters.  Since my shutters have been painted several different colors I am not going to strip the shutters down to the wood.  I am going to mix some chalk paint to a color similar to the English Chestnut stain.  I mixed Waverly truffle, crimson and pumpkin chalk paint.

Painting two coats on both shutters.  I am only painting the front of my shutters.

I dry brush a mixture of Waverly truffle and ivory chalk paint to the shutters.

To attach the shelf to the shutter:  I turned the shutter over, counted up 5 slats and placed my shelf on the shutter.  I traced around the base of my shelf to give me a visual of where I need to place the screws.

I placed my shutter on two objects to lift my shutter off the floor.  I placed the shelf underneath the shutter in place.  Making sure the base of the shelf is where I traced.  Using wood screws I attached the shelf.  I did the same thing to the other shutter.

I used 4 picture rings to the back of my shutters to hang on the wall.  Measured and attached the rings to the shutters.

They are ready to hang on the wall.

I placed them on each side of my mirror.

With the sunburst being different shades I tried to do the same with the shutters.

I am adding my two lanterns to the shelves.  First I need to paint them.  🙂  I took the lanterns apart and gave them two coats of Krylon Satin Oxford Blue.

I added my freshly painted lanterns, greenery and a brass candle stick on each shelf.

Here is the full view of my wall.  What do you think of the shutter shelves?

Reminding you what the wall looked like before…..

And now…..

I hope you enjoy my re-purposed shutter shelves.

    1. Thanks Chloe. I have been wanting to do something on the wall for a long time. They work nicely and since I had the shutters on hand why not use them. 🙂

  1. What a fun upcycle, Terrie! You did an awesome job pairing those shelves with the shutters! I love the distressed look you gave them and they go perfectly with your sunburst mirror! And those lanterns!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the color! Great job adding just the right accessories too! I’ve got a shutter around here somewhere. Time to get out the tools! 🙂

    1. Christine you are so sweet. I have to say my favorite is the color of my lanterns now. I love the color. I needed to bring the wall together for such a long time. With the time I have at home (before we can go outside to play) I wanted to tackle items I put off. Yes….grab that shutter and do something with it. Don’t forget to share it with me!
