Let’s change our outdoor cushions without breaking the bank? I am sharing how I made a simple slip cover for my porch cushions. If you can sew a basic stitch on a sewing machine you can do this project.
Patio Cushion Slip Cover Tutorial
Our cushions are about 27 years old and they have seen better days. With this being said I want to share with you how I recover our cushions in a simple way. First, I had to remove the previous slip covers I had on my cushions.
The fabric I am using is 56″ wide which I cut two sections side by side.

How to cut the slip cover out
- lay your fabric on a flat surface
- placed the cushion on the fabric
- leaving 2½” around the cushion’s edge for the cut line.
4. Cut out two pieces one for the front and the other for the back, a third piece 18″ piece in length.
Prepping the small pocket (18″ piece)
- place the fabric wrong side up
- fold over the edge of the wider width of the fabric to create a small hem
- stitch a basic stitch
Pinning the slip cover together
- Place one cut fabric right side up on a flat surface
- Center the cushion on top of fabric
3. Place the other piece of fabric wrong side up on top of cushion
4. Place the 18″ hemmed piece on top, wrong side up and hem at the bottom
5. Pinning straight pins to the center of each side, top and bottom of fabric, this will hold the cushion in place.
6. Continual pinning the straight pins along the sides and the bottom of the cushion.
7. Do not pin the end with the three pieces, keep this end open.
8. Remove the cushion from the slip cover.
9. Sew a basic stitch using the pins as a guide, do not stitch close the top section.
10. Cut the excess fabric ¼” from the stitch.
11. Turn the slip cover outside in, making sure to poke out the corners.
12. Slip the cushion back into the pocket.
13. Pin the open end tightly with straight pins.
14. Stitch together using a basic stitch. This is a little tricky, I had to move my sewing desk out from the wall.
15. Cut excess fabric.
16. With the small hemmed piece turn it outside in flipping it over the cushion to the other side, this conceals the raw edge.
That’s it! Place it on your chair and enjoy! With the little back pocket this keeps the cushion in place.
Got to keep going this is one of 8 cushions. 7 more to go!!

Thank you so much. I have done this several times and each time the covers hold up until I want to change them out. My cushions needs to be replaced soon. ha!

For sure Kippi. We love sitting back on the porch when the weather isn’t too hot. I love the thought of relaxing but that never happens. lol.
